Your Personal RE Game Rankings

Ironically, opinions on RE games between myself & my friends changed quite dramatically.

I used to be extremely annoyed by RE 4 RNG. But once I got new game plus, I didn't have that as a factor & had no other complaints really. I don't care much for the island overall but new game plus makes it not bad. RE 4 ended up in my top 4. It's 1 of the 4 RE games I ever finished replaying a second time on my own. The others being RE 1-3 remakes.

My friend who used to love RE 4, had a strong change of heart after a conversation made him think it was too much action & not enough horror in recent years. It became his second least favorite of the main games, only beating RE 6. They also used to have RE 2 as their favorite, but that changed to RE Remake.

I honestly have lost some of my love for RE4 over the years because of the arguments people have made. I still rank it as my second favorite RE game because it is still an amazing game.

But yeah. it does have a lot of cheese and annoying segments (lava room, drill room, mine cart rally, etc.), loses steam as it goes on, and it really just said Umbrella was brought down in court and the stock market. But I dont hold these things as against it as I should because when it comes to gameplay and fun, it is the top RE game when you consider the time period.

I agree with this. I've criticized the game very harshly numerous times, but that was only from the viewpoint as a fan looking back, but it's objectively still a terrific game. I know when it first came out, I was excited for it and I enjoyed it without question. Same with Resident Evil 5, and I still stand by each game as video games. They're some of my favorites and they definitely have merit outside the boundaries of the series.

My age and wisdom has only made me more sour on the game as a fan, but it also made me more aware of why I love this series so much. Knowing why this game is different made me understand what exactly I enjoy about the classic games in the series, but the enjoyment I got from Resident Evil 4 never dissipated because I've also come to understand why exactly RE4 just works so well despite any personal fan related criticism. That doesn't mean the game is flawless by any means as I still feel the game has some serious pacing issues, but it's not enough to tank my entire opinion of the game.

The only other RE game I keep having complicated feelings of is RE 7. I have tried playing it through 2 or 3 times now. The farthest attempt, I got to the ship before stopping.

Maybe it's just my genuine interest in RE Village trying to find a substitute game until it releases. Or maybe it's myself enjoying RE 7 more as I get used to it. Either way, I don't know if I will ever push to finish RE 7 or just skip ever finishing it myself & aim for RE Village.

To be honest, after you leave the ship, there is not much game left. The ending gets a little rushed (as almost all RE games are nowadays), and if you wanted to, you could finish the game out from there. If you have enough upgrades, the game is much easier at the end too, so if you have the desire to do it, I would say you have maybe 2.5 hours left depending on how much of the ship is left to play.

I probably won't touch RE 7 again. Any time I try revisiting another RE game that isn't RE 1-4, I just end up wanting to play one of those instead. RE 4 is possibly my #2 game of the franchise in retrospect, since new game plus gets rid of my complaints, where any complaint I have in RE 2 & RE 3 are always there.

I can't bring myself to play the original RE 2 & 3, due to the stutter during camera transitions causing nausea. So I just have the remakes to play instead, which have minor things I wish I could change but I still enjoy. Mainly, RE 2's scenario structure I wish was the original, where A scenario is Birkin focused & B scenario is Tyrant focused, allowing to switch who is focused on which villain story wise. RE 3, I just wish the maps were interconnected.

I actually am taking a break from RE games until Village. It has the potential to become one of my favorites. I really enjoy the idea of a Transylvania type place, especially if it's an interconnected Village. The enemy types & environments I find interesting. The inventory seems to pause gameplay, which I wanted in RE 7. The gathering money & resources I hope isn't RNG, or if it is, hopefully treats me better than RE 4 RNG.

Most likely the drops will be generated based on how well you are doing in the game. RE4 and all subsequent enemy drop titles have used this principle, so it makes sense RE Village will do the same thing. The nice thing about RE4 is that they will drop primo ammo if you find yourself out of a certain type more often than not. But if you play too well, you are getting garbage anyway. haha.

This is pretty encouraging! I am about 20 minutes in to Village and it is so scary feeling so powerless in the beginning. I am sure I will feel much more empowered by the end though like I did in RE7!

I hope to see a lot of people updating their lists!

I'm sure a lot of people won't add it so close to the top like I did but I thought it was pretty good, personally. I posted a review but it's got spoilers. :/

I have my in laws coming this weekend so I have to be cleaning for like 8 hours a day after work! Maybe I will play Village between like midnight and 3 am and just get no sleep. haha. The... most scary hours.

I probably will, Rain. I'm having a lot of fun playing RE Van Helsing. After I finish Village, I'll update my list with RE3 Remake too (and separating the remakes from the original ones). My only spoiler: I played Umbrella Corps and it's definitely going to last spot. Ugh.

Updated mine as well. Cut out ones I never played, moved a few around. I like RE8 about as much as RE6, what 6 does better are the protagonists, character development, and a better Mercenaries. Villains suck in both games to me.

I never played the other spinoffs (I did try Gun Survivor once at a friend's place and Gun Survivor 2 in an arcade).

Here's an update on my list after playing Village. Not very high on my list but I still enjoyed it for what it was, I just really dislike Ethan and first person perspective. A big part of Resident Evil for me is characters so that was a huge draw back for me in 7 and Village. First person gets boring for me after a bit. Only part that I really liked was the Castle. Loved exploring the scenery and loved the Dimitrescus. Would have loved to have them in the game more.

Since I have finally decided how I felt about Village and have seen so many other updated rankings, I decided to look at mine as well and see how I feel in 2021 about my previous rankings.

1. Resident Evil 2
2. Resident Evil 4
3. Resident Evil REmake
4. Resident Evil 2 REmake
5. Resident Evil Village
6. Resident Evil CV
7. Resident Evil 3
8. Resident Evil 7
9. Resident Evil
10. Resident Evil 5
11. Resident Evil Rev 2
12. RE Zero
13. Resident Evil 3 REmake
14. Resident Evil Outbreak (1 and 2)
15. Resident Evil Rev 1
16. Resident Evil Survivor
17. Resident Evil 6
18. Resident Evil Dead Aim

I moved CV up after some consideration. I moved RE6 up a single spot as well after replaying it this year. And Village has really solidified itself as one of my favorite in the series. Of course, all of these can be changed somewhat every day. lol

Revised my rankings after finishing Village...

1. RE Village
2. RE Remake
3. RE 4
4. RE 2 Remake
5. RE 3 Remake
6. RE 7
7. RE REV 2
8. RE 0
9. RE REV
10. RE 5
11. RE 6

RE 4, I only need it in New Game Plus to make what I don't like about it to be corrected. So my only complaint is I need NG+, which is a temporary complaint.

RE 7, I didn't enjoy Margarite's boss fight. I kept having long gaps where we couldn't find each other & it was really awkward. Also, Jack's final boss fight was annoying for me. Having to pop every single eye was a hindrance towards enjoying it when, at times, he covered them up completely.

RE 3 Remake, I wish the maps were interconnected, making a more immersive city & more Nemesis chases, in the process. Also, the Carlos horde section felt odd & immersion breaking since bodies explode after death. After my first 20 times playing it through early on, I haven't return to it since.

RE Village & RE Remake I have 0 complaints aboit.

RE 2 Remake, I wish the scenarios were like the original, A being Birkin focused & B more focused on Mr X. But I love everything else about it.

RE REV 2, switching characters to discover things is annoying when playing solo. It can also be annoying if I have to access inventory during combat, like to make myself not blind or to use a tourniquet.

RE 0, switching characters can be annoying, inventory management is annoying, & The Bat Boss Fight is just awful, since you have many targets that you auto aim to that isn't the boss.

RE REV, I didn't enjoy the Parker flashback sections or playing as the comedy duo. The final boss is cool but annoying to fight at the same time.

RE 5, Having a constant partner in danger is annoying when solo. Upgrading two sets of weapons is also annoying. Also I don't ever enjoy the turret level, Chapter 2-3. Part of the fun of RE games is to take shots and move around, but they take that away for a whole level.

RE 6, just about everything I don't like. Each level is too long, making it a slog to play. Having stamina tied to melee just makes it less fun to use. Too many QTE sections for my liking. Also the running sections with the camera in front of you and having to slide under things as they come into frame also isn't great. Too many instant fail set pieces in general.

Never finished CVX, or the Original RE 1-3, so it felt inaccurate to try ranking them.

Here’s my ranking of the series (excluding games like the Outbreak series) after finally completing RE Village. Tastes and feelings have definitely changed over time, as some may notice. I feel like my ranking comes down to storytelling primarily and gameplay being the second big deciding factor. I also want to make the list simplified by lumping the remakes with the originals (though I do prefer the remakes over the originals).

1. REmake
2. REmake 2
3. RE Revelations 2
4. RE Code Veronica
5. REmake 3
6. RE Village
7. RE 7
8. RE 5
9. RE 4
10. RE 6
11. RE Revelations
12. RE 0

Murrdogg - I think that is a very unique way of looking at things. And I have to say, I completely agree with your analysis of RE7. That game was great, but I feel like some boss fights and lack of enemy diversity could have used some polish before release.

bSTAR - I think it is good to have some change in opinions over time. Everyone who has reposted their game lists have changed their minds to different degrees as they have gotten older. And I also like the more compact list. Makes it easier to read. haha

Must have missed this thread... I will admit I haven't played every single title unfortunately as you will see I practically refused to touch RE6 and had little interest in RE8, Others I just never had the chance tbf.

The following is in rough order all the way down.

Top Tier:
RE1
RE2
RE4

Upper Tier:
RECV
RE3
RE Revelations

Mid Tier:
RE0
RE7
RE5
RE Revelations 2

Low Tier:
RE ORC
