Resident Evil: Requiem

People have entirely the wrong priorities, sometimes. In a series with serializes entries, what determine’s any entry’s relevance is story, first and foremost.

Oh I agree, definitely, but that's how it was back then. And bear in mind this was at a time when the Internet and social media were in it's infancy and therefore "mass New Age enlightenment" was virtually non existent so CV, 0, and REmake sold poorly due to tactfully bad marketing decisions by Capcom which gave us RE4 and the rest is history.

Clearly, his biggest fans here who can't stop talking about him. You know what they say about haters being fans. Yeah, classic case.

You’d be the first in line. You’d even ask him to splash some of his egg white on your own face.

At the time of its release it was indeed treated/marketed as some kind of nuanced side game. It was not until RE4 was released when CV's plot became cemented into the mainline series more solidly, which weirdly made it more popular in retrospect.

I know it was a mainline game which has been lost on people these days no thanks to Capcom.

But I didn’t mean to imply it wasn’t, just that (according to Dusk) Capcom are treating it like they would any other big budget main game. As opposed to remake 3 for example which they treated with much less respect.

I wasn’t playing the series at the time it came out, but I was playing before 4 ever came out, and I was never under any impression of CV being anything but the main entry game that came after 3 and before 0, with one line of dialogue squishing Survivor in there. I mean, CV was almost twice as long as any entry that came before it, that’s not the mark of a side story. When 4 came out and it was still being called 4 it irritated me, as it was clearly 5. But, whatevs.

Yes I feel I sorta answered this in my previous response to Ikawaru. Back then numbers did not mean mainline. Back when CV was an upcoming game it was just the next main RE game, just like 4, 5 and onwards were when they were announced.

Much has been said on that 'CV is the real RE3' topic, and it is definitely a sentiment I agree with. It was always called CV but it was always the next sequel, after 2, not 3. It was meant to be the third game, if you will (well, after they scrapped the HUNK based RE3).

0 is an odd one. Isn’t it called "zero" in some territories? Cute naming convention aside, I have always considered it as a spinoff.

While I disagree with your implication that CV was widely received as a mainline game in when it was released (it was not, as RE3 sold much more copies than CV due to the latter being released on an alien platform), that was kind of a strange post from T. A fan of somebody is somebody who perpetuates their thoughts/feelings/worldview. A critic is someone takes those things and shreds them so I do not know where that came from.

RE3 sold about 3.5 million, and CV sold like 2.9 million.

Considering CV launched on a DOA console and wasn’t numbered, while 3 was numbered, was a follow up to the stellar RE2 and most importantly was on the freaking PS1, I think CV performed better all things considered.

Projecting your own fantasies, huh? Went from hating Dusk to talking about his semen. You really are a superfan. However, I don't think this forum is the appropriate outlet for such discourse. More power to you, I'm not judging, but tone down the sexual fantasies.

Hasn't gotten weird at all...

Maybe tone down the not at all subtle innuendo and keep it normal, yeah?

Gone proper off eggs now, though, I tell you...

Code Veronica is definitely worthy of the full budget treatment from the same team that made RE2make and RE4make. If that turns out to be the case, I'm really looking forward to it.

Back when it first released I split the cost of hiring a Dreamcast with 2 friends and we had from Friday evening until Sunday at 7:00pm to beat the game. I ended up getting soft locked in the ground fight with Tyrant from lack of ammo and had to go back to an older save file and horde more ammo. Finally beating that boss was an awesome moment that I'll never forget.

I played it on PS2 and thought it was amazing. The improved graphics and dense atmosphere of the game was a great leap forward.

Too bad they botched the release or else it could kept the momentum of the series going from the broader perspective. ;)

The potential is very high. So many zapping opportunities too. My idea was to see all the carnage you cause in Claire’s portion to persist so when Chris shows up he sees it, the dead creatures she kills, bullet holes/blood splatter on the wall, and any disruption to the environment she causes. They won’t do any of this, but it’s nice to dream.

In Requiem news, we can put to rest the notion that Grace won’t be capable of action gameplay, and that this must be handled by a second protagonist; the director confirms that while she’s not as competent as Chris or Jill, as an FBI agent she does have weapons training making her more of a combatant than Ethan (who even in 7 was able to handle his share of action).

It’s built into the game that she’s terrified at first because it’s her first encounter with BOWs, but you "go on a journey with her" and she becomes stronger over the course of the game.

This is from a Gamescom interview btw.

It doesn't mean there isn't a 2nd protagonist though. Usually when there are multiple playable characters in a Resident Evil game they all can handle guns. There still can be more horror focussed sections and more action focussed sections which both have gun play. We don't know for sure yet.

No, but it does quell the notion that the "high stakes cinematic action" is beyond Grace, as some people were implying she cannot possibly partake in such action and that it MUST be for a different, more hardened protagonist.

Yes, but will the "high stakes cinematic action" sections be played as Grace and/or only as Grace? The chance for Leon (or someone else) is still there.

The “chance” is practically a certainty. Name one game in the series that wasn’t explicitly a spin-off where you only played as one character through the whole game? We’re gonna be someone else at some point.

Yeah, that interview doesn't really dispel any rumors. We all know Grace will have weapons and be capable of combat. It wouldn't be a proper Resident Evil game otherwise.

She’s still just a regular person who is out of her depth. Combat is not her area of expertise which they make pretty clear, but working for the FBI, she has basic weapon training which is just their way of justifying her being competent at shooting things because it's a Resident Evil game and we're obviously going to be shooting things.

Their exact wording was that she can handle herself "a little better than Ethan" because of her FBI background, which doesn't read as her suddenly being capable of cinematic action sequences. Ethan was pretty goddamn clumsy, always getting chopped up and mutilated, which I doubt Grace will have to go through as she won't have fungus powers or whatever the hell Ethan had to fall back on.

Considering how much she's sh*tting herself, tripping, and crying in the demo where she has no weapons, her growth is more than likely to do with how she reacts to monsters as well as the typical journey every RE protagonist goes through in finding better resources and not in suddenly performing action feats worthy of such bold exclamations, especially if it's not going to deliver to an exceptional standard.

But in all fairness, we still have no idea what combat looks like in this game as we have only seen a very early stalker segment without any traditional enemies or weapons. So there's likely still a few mechanics we still haven't heard about yet that will play a part in Requiem's gameplay loop that could influence the general tone and atmosphere of the rest of the game. With that being said, I highly doubt they'll break the contrast they have established with the rookie characters by having Grace suddenly branch out into action.

I think the most fascinating thing about that interview for me was what they had to say in regards to the camera perspectives and why they made both options available. They basically acknowledge the fact that they split the fanbase in two with 7/Village and the remakes and so with this one, they wanted to satisfy both.

Combine this with the director's earlier comments about how fans will like this more than his last two games and finding a way to move the series forward, I think it signifies a lot more than people realize. We have 2 camera perspectives for 2 different types of fans. New story, old setting. Survival horror, cinematic action. New character... returning character? Not only is it very apparent they're synergizing the brand, but they're obviously trying to cater to everyone. This game essentially has the same mission RE6 had, except this time, they're likely going to nail it.

Also, rumors aside, there's absolutely no way Capcom will ship a game of this magnitude on the shoulders of a brand new female protagonist given the general sexism of the gaming industry. She’s 100% going to share that cover space with someone else.
