Resident Evil: Requiem

Yeah. The guy who thinks Code Veronica is scary and perhaps the best in the series doesn't strike me as someone who would be prescient on how the series unfolds. ;)
Guilty as charged I had a great time with Code Veronica back on the Dreamcast. My favourite games in the series are RE2 and RE2R, closely followed by the true sequel to RE2, Code Veronica.

That's a big part of the reason why I'm looking forward to RE9, because there is promise it will have some connections to RE2 and possibly gameplay like RE2R.

It’s official (well, technically not yet), Leon has finally leaked via the PS Store. Dusk Golem finally got something right.

Ikawaru, pay the man.

He’s still saying Leon and Grace will be “co-stars“ and that Grace won’t overshadow Leon. Considering his original pitch was that it was really Leon’s game, he’s still yet to be proven wrong. Any fool following the series for the last 25 years could have guessed Leon would be in the game, so I don’t think he gets much cred for that one.

Where’s that guy who was so confident Leon wasn’t in the game? Despite Nick’s resume having an NDA’ed game with the exact same job title and listing as his other RE projects and conveniently listed right above them? Despite the director following Nick on Twitter and none of the other English VAs? Despite the fact that it’s a return to the locale that he’s become synonymous with for the franchise’s 30th anniversary? Despite Jeff Keighley confirming it wouldn’t solely be survival horror and Nak smirking when saying Leon was a bad fit for horror (his so-called “100% confirmation”)? Despite Capcom suspiciously only revealing 1 of the 5 DLC costumes for the Deluxe Edition (there’s only one reason they would do that: they’re “hiding” something)? Despite the Steam pre-order page kinda leaving breadcrumbs (there’d be no need to say “change Grace’s appearance only” if she was the only playable character)? And everything else.

It’d be a shocker if he wasn’t in it to be frank, it was the worst kept-secret in the world before this. Hell, IGN kinda let it slip at GamesCom. And naysayers called us crazy for supposedly reading too much into that (into “next time you’re looking at RE Requiem footage”? Sure Jan).

Now we know why they didn’t release the demo: the PC version would’ve datamined the “big secret reveal”. I actually kinda wish they didn’t leak the box art because now the Game Awards reveal in a couple of days isn’t gonna be as uplifting. Now it’s gonna go from jawdrop to “yay, cool”.

I agree it seems obvious at the very least to warrant legitimate speculation, but apparently I'm not "someone who would be prescient on how the series unfolds."

And so, the question shifts now to the nature of Leon’s role in the game. Dusk insisted from the start that he was the main protagonist, but that has been unequivocally disproven; as that’s Grace. Capcom have said it’s about her, we will be playing mostly as her, of this i’m 100% certain.

Anyway, some backtracking later, Leon’s now merely a protagonist, info which still conflicts with what Capcom have officially stated.

There’s also other things we need the game or at least a good look at his gameplay to verify, like is it really Leon’s send off? Is he having these massive open levels and access to a vehicle etc.

Over to you, Geoff.

He recently talked about that, and says that "Leon is not a super small portion of the game like Chris was in RE8, he has multiple playable sections & some very large levels."
Here is the full tweet:

Yeah, although that’s something I will have to see for myself. He just can’t know this detail, that’s what gets me about this.

I find it telling how he avoids reaffirming Leon’s majority role that he previously claimed, instead working the narrative that they’re co-protagonists (which is, again, disputed by Capcom).

I hope he is right that Leon does have a much larger playable role than Chris had in Village, but not because I really care that much if he is right or not but because I want this game to feel more connected to classic Resident Evil, I want to play as a classic character. When I played RE2R for the first time it renewed my enthusiasm for the series. I really hope and want to believe this is the game we have been waiting for!

Capcom hasn't disputed anything. They haven't even officially revealed Leon yet. What else do you expect them to say on the subject when they're obviously hiding key parts of the game? Grace being the protagonist of RE9 doesn't negate that Leon is also the protagonist. Nick's resume even says he's playing a lead. The skepticism seems so pointless now.

Capcom have said the entire game is based around Grace and her journey, she's the basis of the entire game. They always left room for other characters, but to me that being true doesn’t line up with the idea that Leon’s like a second protagonist or anything like that.

As for Nick’s resume, Leon’s going to have a key role regardless of playability, so he is a "lead" in that sense.

So are you saying that Leon is either not going to be playable or will only have a short playable section similar to Chris in RE8?

I think Leon will have a significant playable role where he can be considered a 2nd main playable character. I think Grace will be a main focus of the story and that Leon will be a part of that story.

I think Leon will have a “significant” role to play in the same way Chris did in Village (his playable section was brief, but his actual role in the story was crucial), or in the way Ada’s role in 4 was (ditto here).

20 hours to go until The Game Awards and the next look at RE9. Anyone else want to post final predictions?

I’m saying that regardless of how much he’s playable, be that half the game, a short section, or not at all, he’s still going to be important to the plot and therefore a "lead", as per Nick’s resume.

I personally think he’s playable of course, more than Chris was in 8; leaning more towards horror, so it’ll be a slower burn than his episode of destroy all Lycans, lengthwise somewhere between Mia’s part in 7 and Carlos’s in 3.
