Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City (2021)

All I have to say is if they have no intention of respecting the source material than they should not even use those events from Raccoon City or the established characters at all.

Sure you can take certain liberties but when it comes to adapting fan favorite characters you also have to show great respect and care to what make that character who they are and what resonates with that character's fanbase, like for instance I've heard the theory of both Claire and Leon being a part of STARS and how Chris is going to be in Raccoon City which ****ters a core character element of Claire looking for her brother which did not get resolved until Code Veronica, changing the lore to fit a new narrative is fine but you also need to be sure not to make it TO drastic otherwise you just pi$$ off those fans of the character.

So yes if they have no intention of respecting the source material or being bound by the expectations that come with adapting those characters properly than they should just make a series but set it in a new city with all new characters under the Resident Evil name, they can still use the bioweapons and monsters from the games as well as Umbrella as the badguys but have it centered around a new cast.

Agreed. It’s amazing how they complicate the source material and it’s even more amusing to hear some fans say that they don’t know what would make a proper RE movie/series adaptation.

At any rate, I’ve lost interest in seeing any film or show adaptations for the time being. I didn’t even bother seeing the last live action RE movie because the entire series attempt was a dumpster fire trying to rake in money. Sadly it worked for them and it’s also the reason any future film or show adaption with be half assed and shallow.

Capcom has given them a very simple plot with lovable characters that can easily be expanded on further with solid writers and actors but they seem to deliberately miss the mark. It’s why I’ve enjoyed the more grounded approach that Capcom has taken with the newer remakes as they are at least trying to convey the stories of the previous games in a sensible and fun way. Hopefully RE8 follows suit, despite the questionable rumors.

Take it with a grain of salt, but my sources stated that the director is combining the first two games into one storyline. Not sure if they meant half the movie is one story, half is the other; or if they are just combining characters and locations and creating one story using elements from the video game. Also, the reason for a younger Wesker was due to a romantic subplot where Chris and Wesker were both vying for Jill's affections. Not 100% sold that any of this is solid info.

Alright, here's my take on this.

If it was just Chris and Jill who are in romantic relationship or whatever, like in Romero's '98 RE script (and i think in other rejected scripts as well?), i would be fine with it, although i would always prefer if they stay in best friends/partners type of relationship, like in the games. But this... i really should't be that surprised, considering how it's Greg Russo who's involved in the script. Let's just say that his Mortal Kombat script wasn't exactly a masterpiece from what i remember.

Greg Russo is not writing the script. He was replaced with the director who is writing his own. I noticed during an interview last summer that the director mentioned pitching his own story and the studio being happy. I asked Russo on Twitter if this was true and he blocked me. It was later mentioned in November that the director is indeed writing his own script.

This would be the first project Russo has been let go from. So I can understand if he was sore about it.

Thanks for clearing that up. I read before how both of them were working on the script, so i thought that whatever the latest draft is, it's still based on what Russo wrote all the way back in 2016 (?), but it's good to know that's not the case. I wonder, what's going on with F.E.A.R, another video adaptation Russo is/was working on, and is or will he also be removed from that one as well.

I was not aware he was writing F.E.A.R.

I know that he is attached to Death Note 2 for Netflix, Mortal Kombat (which he was on location in Australia - possibly for rewrites) for Warner Bros, and was attached to the Resident Evil reboot film for Constantin Film. Which makes me wonder... The guy is actually a good screenwriter, but still... How the heck do you manage to have no prior credits yet get attached to THREE different adaptations of big name properties? I just don't get it.

I will say this: There was a lot in his 2018 draft of Mortal Kombat I didn't like (as opposed to the 2016 draft which I downright hated). Mostly of plot lines thrown out and some major character changes. But from a storytelling point of view, and script structure, and just overall spectacle, I feel he did an amazing job. And he did several rewrites after that. Is it going to be well received by fans? Probably not. It may not even be a good movie (felt like they were trying for a Marvel's Avengers movie), and the combination of martial arts, graphic violence, and heavy digital effects are just a weird combination. Not sure how it will play out with today's filmmaking style. But Russo is a good script writer in my book. Not GREAT, not a Christopher Nolan or Quentin Tarantino or Wes Anderson. But he understands how to write a good screenplay that hits all the marks.

So he may have written a good Resident Evil script. We probably will never know.

So they finally announced the cast for the reboot resident evil movie series, we have Chris, jill, leon, claire, birkin and wesker...
It seem it will follow resident evil 1 and 2 story
At least this sound better than the netlfix live action adaptation

Honestly? I really don't care. I gotta hand it to them though...bold move to race bend Leon with an British-Indian actor eh? Bet the fans aren't going to endless complain about that, fueling another sjw x Anti-sjw feud that's as needless as it comes. Good work.

The cast seems pretty bland, honestly. The only one who actually resembles the character is Kaya (she does looks like Re2R Claire) and the others are...meh. No one jumps the eye and makes you say "Oh, this actor really looks like he could do X character".

Also, I've been reading weird things, like mixing RE1 and 2 together and a love triangle between Jill, Chris and Wesker and...like I said, it's hard to care about this movie. Infinite Darkness has my undivided attention on the RE movie front.

I can't wait for people to complain that it's nothing like the original Resident Evil movies. That should be fun. But yeah, I smelled trash a mile away, but someone will love it anyway. I'm with @Mr.R here. Give me more Infinite Darkness.

This is cool. I'm not crazy about the casting choices but the fact that they are using so many main characters is a good sign at least.

Another thing...I'm also past the point of wanting another "origin" stories for Resident Evil (especially this one, who's gonna start setting up a different universe, where Raccoon City is a dying city and blah blah blah). Give me a live action tie-in on the canon of the series with David Boreanaz as Chris and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as Leon, with both of them old and gruff killing zombies and doing stuff and I would be set.

Blackwashed Jill and Arab Leon! I just won't watch this CJW s**t and will pretend it doesn't exist!
This sound a bit racist
Like if color of your skin or you're nationality will mark how good you're performance will be

I don't actually have any problem whit the actors as long ad they deliver a good performance
Maybe a Blackwashed jill and an Arabian leon like you say can deliver a better performance and more closer to the original videogame character than a white jill and white leon actors lol
Like leon from retribution lol despite being a Caucasian guy whit leon hair it's sucked bed at performing leon

Also in my opinion is absurd to think that this is sjw thing, just because of leon and jill skin color , if everyone where white it would have been okay then? Lol

Wanting the characters to look like the characters in the game is racist now. Guess Resident Evil 5 was racist too since people don't know what the word means anymore.

I think that Hannah john kamen can easy pass as jill and Avan Jogia look like Leon if he dye his hair

But for some people the problem here seems that they're skin is a bit darker and that they're not american, not that they don't lool like the character

Albert wesker actor for example look nothing like wesker, his face is totally different, his nose, his hear, his eyes are totally different , yet nobody say anything about that, because he his white, so it's ok, 99% of his face look nothing like Albert but no problem the 1% remaining, his skin color, is ok so he can perform wesker ... But nope for leon and jill actors , because they re skin is not white and they're not American, despite them having similar facial feature whit the character

If this isn't racism lol

Nobody looks like their counterpart. The race switching is just obvious pandering that reveals how little this project actually cares to do the games justice and I wouldn't consider anyone in this cast to be amazing actors either. Also, nobody cares if they're American or not.
