Your opinion about 'Internet Freedom'

What's your opinion about the Internet freedom? Is it all right or do they give you a little too much of freedom?

Well, in my opinion, there's simply too much freedom on the Internet. Let's forget about porn. They should at least delete those video's pictures that contains too much sick, bloody stuff. It could scare children. It scared me, at least.

I, for instance, saw a video where a man's head got cut off by terrorists. You could hear him screaming really hard, and the deeper the knife cut in the throat, the higher the scream became. It eventually looked like the voices of Alvin and the Chipmunks.

There was also this video about a Chinese girl, killing rabbits brutally. Those who are friends on my Facebook can see the video on my profile. The video itself is very painful. It was a cute, little white bunny...

And at last, there's this Dutch video, named 'Kneusje wil duiken' (Kneusje wants to dive). I didn't see this one, but my vriends told me what happened. A man jumped off a cliff into the see. But he landed on another rock with his head. His head split apart, and then he felt in the seawater, full with salt. They eventually worked on taking him to the hospital, but he died. The doctor tried to hold his head as one, but he eventually died.

Stuff like this should automatically be deleted from the Internet. It just provides too much freedom. I couldn't think normally for a few weeks once I saw that man whose head got cut off. And I couldn't stop myself from cursing and threatening when I saw that inhumane woman.

I sort of agree with you Jaggy. I do think that the internet is just a little too "open". But of course, if people don't want children seeing these things, they need to be paying a little more attention. Monitor their PC use. Install one of those nanny software things, that'll allow them to only access certain things.

While the internet gives access to a lot of really ugly things, it also gives us access to loads of information and such, that we can use for the good

Well, my friend's father installed that program on her computer and she says that those programs block some sites for no reason. Those programs suck =( But you're right about the information-part. But still, the Internet (or whoever controlls the Internet) should delete those stuff automatically.

I'm of the oposite opinion on matters such as this. Sure, it's dark, bloody content, but thats just what the world is.
The world isn't all "sunshine and rainbows", and believing it is could probably cause one to become delusional.

The state of todays world is what it is: Cold, unforgiving, brutal, and miserable. The spirit of the world is broken. Those of us who live in "secure" states like US, UK, ect - are living in a city that trys to pass itself off as a decent, civilized city, when in reality thats just an illusion. The city may look nice and civillized, but thats all for nothing when we, the people, are enslaved by our Governments.

So you see the internet reflects what happens in the world. The only thing the internet needs ridding of is the virus' and pornography.

Sorry if I went on a rant there. I just hope I make sense.

I have a take on this i'm not sure anyone else has...I don't see the freedom in the internet...here is why...What is the internet SUPPOSED to be? Answer: Free Information For All...But that's not true...Information is power...If you know things someone else does not, or that the masses do not, then YOU are in the postion of power of them...But if all information was free, like the internet preaches, then we wouldn't have people in positions of much greater power than others...we could all come to the same conclusions...No, i think the internet gives us an illusion of freedom...Not to say the internet is bad...far from it actually...but it is NOT free...and what we get from it is NOT free...

Power is what all people want, and other people need someone powerful to follow...the internet either helps or hinders them...depending on your view point, but can't accomodate both sides...

I think you're onto something here, but I'm a bit on the fence. I've always viewed the internet as sort of the modern day version of the printing press. This is because information and knowledge has now become readily available to essientially anyone who wants it and ideas are allowed to spread with much greater ease, at least in the industrialized world. Heck, most books are online now. If I remember my communications history correctly, the Bible essientially became available to far more people with the advent of the printing press and its translation to the vernacular (as before it was only available to clergy and other elite who used it to their monetary advantage - books were hand-printed and thus only the wealthy could afford them). Then what you had was people realizing that the Church had been lying to them about what the Bible said and this all came to fruition with Martin Luther and his 95 theses and the eventual Protestant Revolution. People DO become more intelligent and less naive when information is available to them. Likewise, with the internet, you have so much research and knowledge available at your fingertips and I do think this information is free for all... providing you have the interest or desire to seek it. Alot of people now get their news online. During election periods, alot of people go online to look at party platforms on offical webpages. Lots of people are now finding jobs and doing schooling online. Sure, if you're just using the internet to stalk your next-door neighbour on Facebook, then yeah, illusion of freedom. But, like I said, as a university student, the internet has been such an invaluable resource and I believe it has the potential to be for anyone provided they have the initiative to use it for something other than entertainment.

Anyway, my personal two cents on the original matter. I do think parents should be more careful and aware of what their children are doing online. It's like what they used to say about TV - children are now online so bloody often that it's almost was if the World Wide Web is raising them. As for the violent videos - well, for me, I've never just stumbled upon one that I didn't intend to watch. I mean, if a 'related video' on Youtube has a disgusting title and pic, then I'm not going to bother to watch it. I guess I'm just against censoring anything in many cases. Personal responsibility and all that jazz. If I want to see something, I want to be able to see it without the government telling me it'll offend my tender little sensibilities.

And Silverback... was totally with you all the way until I got to the porno part. Then I was like 'ooh man, can't win with that.'

The internet is the best thing thats ever happened to mankind.If we let government block out the internet we are screwed.

Now yeah there are these bad videos but you rarely ever accidentally stumbled on them and if you do theres usually a giant warning saying "TERRORIST SAWS OFF MANS HEAD, BLOODY,GORY DISTURBING!!!!" and as people do "lol do i click?".As Silverback said the world ain't sunshine and rainbows, 35000 kids die Every.Single.Day which is absolutely and completely 100% preventable but they don't tell you that on the news.

For me it's an odd topic.
I got caught on twitter mentioning the more common name for National Socialist when discussing with a friend some history work. A guy from the police traced my IP called our house and informed my mum of this.
Now, it's a bit of a two sided issue.
1) There are those, like myself, that tread on thin ice. The context of the use of words can be misunderstood and interpreted by some as offensive. I see now why I was caught. They (the National Socialists) seem to have become a joke that has gotten out of hand, and people take it so lightly that they forget, or didn't even know who/what they were. The police took it out context but due to the use of the colloquial term for the National Socialists and so I was rightly caught. The Internet can't be free of idiots and so it seems impossible to regulate the content that is uploaded everyday.
2) BUT there are those, such as children, who shouldn't need to see such disgusting images as the ones mentioned above. Why people feel the need to upload it, is ridiculous. Why subject some people to the disturbing fancies of others? The diving video mentioned dan le premiere post was an absolutely shocking video. Yes, while the guy is bleeding to death capture it on camera why don't you? I cracked my head open many years ago next to a pool, and everyone just stopped and stared, not bothering to help. The Internet seems to require some careful policing at times, especially when one wants to look up something for a young child.

And so it seems that the issue of so called 'Internet freedom' is a problem. You have a catch 22. If you ban all content such as the mention of/pictures of/videos of, say, Adolf Hitler, then it may decrease the amount of Internet related issues relating to said political figure, but then again those that need to research him for academic or historical reasons will be at a loss.

So in other words, I sit primely on the fence for the pure reason that if one banned one thing, then group A will suffer, while group B will rejoice. And then if one banned another thing, group A will be happy and group B will be furious. The Internet is a difficult subject because it depends on your point of view.

You either block all content for it, or you don't block it at all. You can never have careful moderation. People get around it.
