Alien Romulus-

I thought it was a decent flick but it’s a bit underwhelming with how the actual Aliens/xenomorphs were handled.

I really loved the Andy character- David Jonsson does a phenomenal job and really stands out here. I also enjoyed the world building and how they went back to a more retro style with the ship and costume designs. They clearly took inspiration from all of the previous movies before it as well as Alien Isolation and The Last of Us. I just wish the 2nd half of the movie was better paced because it all plays out so fast.

Saw Transformers One last night (had another Friday night off from work and took advantage), it was really good. Everything was handled masterfully, from Prime and Megatron (to be)’s relationship to the climax. I loved seeing the growth of their characters (which the Mario Bros. animated film could’ve used) and the set up for the bombastic climax, which was excellent all the way to the end. Not a single dull moment in this movie that I recall and the action and SFX are the best in any Transformers movie to date, both animated and live-action alike.

Moreover, I love how it actually gives us a Transformers movie about the effing Transformers this time instead of the (usually soulless) humans, which we haven’t had since the OG original animated film, which I watched the night before in prep for this. The first live-action (“Bayformers”) film I do like, though.

8.5/10 already pre-ordered the 4K. I hope it does well enough to greenlight the sequel, which they set up nicely.

I just saw Smile 2, I really enjoyed it. One thing I will say is: this one definitely ups the ante with the psychedelic/paranoia sh!t from the first movie. Moreover, I thought Skye was a more interesting and well-rounded character than Rose from the first movie and I felt like the added paranoia/hallucinations brought out the best in her character, not only in her performances, but the weight of the story. Speaking of story, it also felt more focused and self-contained and I liked seeing Skye’s descent into madness in this one more than I did Rose’s. She’s given more to do and the stakes felt higher. I rewatched the first one before going to see this one in the theater BTW.

Glad to see the forum working again. A couple nights ago I had just finished watching a film I wanted to mention, but couldn't post. It's a Netflix film called Spectral, and one of the best in their library I've seen. This is a sci fi about a civil war in Moldova where invisible enemies are wiping out troops, freezing their skin, but boiling them inside. I won't spoil it for you, but just say that the story is more scientific than occult based, yet it brings some good sci fi horror. I would classify it as more of a sci fi thriller than full on sci fi horror, but worth a watch IMO. The effects are pretty good too, and the weapons range from simplistic, to very high tech.

Agreed. Smile 2 is a damn solid psychological horror movie. Naomi Scott really put in the work for that movie- felt like I was going insane with her. lol

Some notable movies that I’ve watched since my last post:

Interstellar- saw this one for its 10 year re-release in IMAX and I’m really glad I got to experience it on the big screen. It’s one of my favorite movies.

Ex Machina- this movie has lots of food for thought. What an ending.

Nosferatu (2024)- really enjoyed this movie and want to see it again in theaters hopefully soon. It had some jump scares that got me good.

I only know Ex_Machina for the spontaneous dance scene, but grabbed the Blu-ray for $3 recently, so I'll fix that. Loved Alex Garland's next movie Annihilation.

Nosferatu I saw in the cinema for New Year's by myself, as a treat. 100% blind, never caught a trailer or free-floating spoilers so I could be entranced by the movie. Quickest 2+ hours a movie at the cinema has felt in a while. Very positive experience.
Needless to say, everything this review says are just some of the reasons why I loved the film: Features, not bugs.

Funny negative review of Nosferatu

Just want to say, and I have no intention of offending anyone, but last time I started making a list of movies I want to watch, you guys had me wanting to check out Smile 2. The first one was OK, but the trailer of S2 looks a bit too woke/weird to me, or is the trailer misleading?

Anyway, a couple shows I've been enjoying lately are Silo and See, both on the Apple TV platform. Silo is like a darker version of Fallout, but without the corny humor and mutants. I have to say it's got a twinge of Wayward Pines too, (very good series btw), especially the way various factions in the community are at odds with each other. Tim Robinson is very good in his role as well.

I'd been so enthralled with Silo over the holidays I was putting off watching See, and partly due to it's trailer making me think it's more of a social drama than Silo is. Boy was I wrong, the episode I just watched has one of the best fight scenes by actors portraying blind people I've ever seen. It brought back memories of an excellent Rutger Hauer film I saw years ago called Blind Fury.

See is far darker than Blind Fury though, but Queen Kane is rather disgusting. I still think Apple charge too much for the content they have, the only other show of theirs I've enjoyed that I recall is For All Mankind.
