What are you watching?

I was not prepared for how terrible Superman was going to be. Captain America: Brave New World was genuinely a better film than whatever this mess of a movie was. This was like Ant-Man: Quantumania levels of bad. So overly produced yet undercooked and cheap looking.

I have no idea why there were so many unnecessary characters shoe-horned into this story. It's very clear James Gunn likes to do movies in one very specific way, and that still hasn't changed with Superman, which was my biggest fear since he was announced for this project.

You don't really get a sense of who Superman is in this movie. He just is, as is everything else in it. Everything and everyone already exists and you're just meant to go with it. It's hard to get invested in any of these characters or their performances because the film doesn't ever really let you connect with them. You're just told things about them amidst the chaos of this film's overly stuffed and convoluted plot.

I've seen the film likened to an episode of Superman: The Animated Series as a positive and it's only half true and definitely not a positive. This movie is very much like a cartoon, if you tuned in on a random filler episode, a couple seasons in, and had absolutely no idea what anything was. But even cartoons, especially one such as Superman: The Animated Series carries much more emotional weight and takes itself far more seriously.

While I certainly appreciate James Gunn's enthusiasm to embrace and showcase the more out there and obscure characters and aspects of comic books, this movie just wasn't it for me. There's a way to make these things work for a character like Superman, which we've seen time and again in various animated projects to much better results than whatever this movie was.

Well, it took 4 tries, but we finally have a good Fantastic Four movie. I saw First Steps last night, and I can proudly say the 4th time was the charm for Marvel’s first family (we don’t talk about those dreadful Fox Fantastic Four movies, especially Fant4sh!t). It was refreshing to finally see some chemistry between the F4 members, Johnny and Sue had some interesting familial bond moments even though Pedro was forced to dial back his insane range by playing this stoic character and we were treated to some fun scenes between Johnny and Ben.

It was also a breath of fresh air just jumping right to the chase and ignoring that space origin story that we’ve already seen numerous times and know about. Like Superman, the F4 have been in this universe’s earth for some time and the movie was better off for it. They tied both it and Vanessa Kirby (who was perfectly cast as Sue Storm)’s real life pregnancy to the meat of the film and it made for a captivating story with a lot of stakes. Johnny and Sue are forced to choose between their overpowered newborn baby and the fate of their world with its inhabitants publicly breathing down their neck. It gave me shades of early Raimi Spider-Man, having the weight of the world on their shoulders.

To address the giant elephant in the room, Galactus looked amazing. We finally get to see him in all his flesh and blood glory on the big screen and boy did he not disappoint, but the main highlight of the movie was Julia Garner’s Silver Surfer. She actually has the biggest villain presence in the movie, Galactus was basically to this movie what Darkseid was to ZSJL. She does the bulk of the villainy work and was great doing it. I normally don’t like changing established characters for the sake of scoring social brownie points (and it usually feels like they are at least initially when they race/genderbend characters), but Surfer being a chick actually felt organic to the story and worked surprisingly well.

Speaking of Silver Surfer, there’s also a big scene between her and Johnny that really packs an emotional punch and sets the stage for the big showdown against Galactus, which was great BTW. I jokingly was like “looks like you might be getting some metallic p*ssy all”, playing off an earlier gag from Ben that they just might have a “thing”. Of course they made that joke (since Johnny’s traditionally a womanizer, not so much here, though) and of course it was from his bro. They didn’t overplay the humor, though like Superman, it was a serious, self-contained story that didn’t rely on having seen the previous movies in this universe to understand it and they largely let the emotional scenes sink in with small bits of humor sprinkled in, another change of pace from the usual Marvel fare.

Is it peak Marvel? Not really, but still a solid time and one of their better movies since 2019. I’ll gladly take that considering what they’ve been putting out since Endgame and what we’ve been getting from this franchise from Fox. I can finally cleanse my brain of those abominations.

^Been wanting to watch the new Fantastic 4, but every time I see a trailer for it I worry I won't like it.

Saw Clown in a Cornfield last night and The Surfer. Neither were as good as I hoped, and I really didn't care for the surprise relationship at the end of CiaC. That said, I plan to watch M3GAN 2.0 tonight, which I'm expecting to be quite a step up from what I've seen lately. Even if it isn't as good as the first one, it will still be a nice break from badly done movies I think. BTW, my personally most anticipated movie of the year is Tron Ares. :geek:

I just watched the new War of the Worlds on Prime Video after seeing the initial 0% RT fresh rating (now up to a 4%, which is still quite frankly too good for it), point blank, this might be one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen. Holy f*cking sh!t was this a mess. I actually feel dumber after sitting through that hot mess of a movie. As if all the shaky cam and terrible CGI from the aliens wasn’t bad enough by itself (it’s the worst CGI I’ve ever seen, it makes The Flash’s CGI look crisp), it’s filled with nonsensical plot twists with more holes than Swiss cheese, terrible drama and cringy dialog. I lost my sh!t for the big reveal of why the aliens are here in the 2025 version, but I assure you it gets worse. Turns out

they actually disable all government and airborne vehicles by eating their data as well

which makes no friggin’ sense because vehicular engines don’t use data. I was like “WTF?” at those alone, nevermind all the other stupid, shaky sh!t the movie constantly flings at you. I was like “WTF wrote/directed this, Uwe Boll?” Yes, the writing is that bad. I legitimately felt like I was watching an Uwe Boll movie while watching this. Actually, even that might be too good for it. At least his movies are laughably bad, this was just bad.

To think Ice Cube went from this to this garbage. Say what you will about the Tom Cruise one, it’s a friggin’ masterpiece compared to 2025.

Vehicles actually ARE quite computer connected anymore, pretty much all their major diagnostics (and security features in some) have been computerized for many decades. In fact as long ago as 1968 the VW Type III was the first car to get an engine computer. Anyone who's made the transition from a truly analog vehicle that has zero data logging, to one that keeps track of all of it's major functions via an onboard computer knows how frustrating and quirky they can be too.

The police have experimented with devices that can remotely shut down vehicles during pursuits, and there's been hackers that have done it too. https://www.wired.com/2010/03/hacker-bricks-cars/

Aside from that, when you're talking about aliens who have more advanced technology, even more possibilities would exist. That said, regarding police pursuits, safety and lack of collateral damage is key. There's a bumper mounted device for police vehicles now called the Grappler, that extends a section of strap that wraps around one of the suspect's rear tires and makes it much cheaper, easier and safer to bring them to a stop.

That said I've seen the trailer of WotW 2025 and it does look very low quality and cheesy. It's not so much the premise of the alien machines "eating" data (yeah it sounds cheesy but I think they mean using data), it's more the horrible acting, camera work and writing. I usually avoid movies that are for lack of a better term "social media based". Meaning I hate when movies heavily spam use of cell phone cams and video calls to convey their message. They always come off as boring home movies to me that are nothing but gimmicks to appeal to cell phone junkies.

Just got done marathoning the Extended Cuts of all the LotR movies. I remember seeing all the 3 movies on the big screen around this time in my middle school years into my freshman year in high school, they’re still amazing all these years later. The cinematography, the spectacle, the heart and emotion each scene carries with great character beats, the amazing fight scenes, the superb performances, the iconic score, these movies are truly pinnacle filmmaking, especially Return of the King, made impossibly better with its Extended Cut. The ending still hits just as hard today as it did 22 years ago, “yes Mr. Frodo, it’s over”, truly iconic stuff.

Such a shame we may never see another film saga like it in our lifetime, the closest we’ll ever get to that is probably Dune.

I recently marathoned the LotR movies with my son who's 13 and had never seen it before or read the books. It was like experiencing it again for the first time through his eyes. He absolutely loved it! I'll definitely have to look into getting the extended versions.

The Haunting Of Queen Mary (2023)

I watched Tron Ares and Predator Badlands recently. Both IMO were the best films of 2025. Predator Badlands got rave reviews, Tron Ares got bad reviews and bombed at the box office, but I thought it was the best Tron yet. Hopefully a cult following will develop and they'll at least recoup the losses.

It's kind of odd that even after "What are you listening to?", "What are you playing?" and "What are you thinking?" threads, and there's still no thread dedicated to what we're watching.

So what's everyone watching? Be it movies, TV or just online videos.

I watched Seven for the first time in years the other day, after I bought a DVD to replace my VHS tape. And all I can say is: FUUUUCK. (Probably my favourite David Fincher movie.)
Everything related to Resident Evil

Predator Badlands

As a long time Predator fan, I never thought I’d see the day that we’d get a Predator in the leading role for a movie. While it does have flaws, it’s a solid flick that I personally enjoyed.
Definitely more entertaining than Prey for me.

Double-post Sorry. Will try not to do it again.

Resident Evil 7 - THE BARN FIGHT

This is the fight that got my attention on this game. Good music.

Just saw Project Hail Mary in 4DX. I’m here to tell you: go see it now. The movie was friggin’ incredible. So many heartstring-pulling moments with great character growth (a chunk of that in flashbacks, but whatevs, which this movie also does a good job of balancing) and Ryan Gosling was great, as usual. Never thought I’d find myself caring for a rock alien in a glass cube as much as I did, that’s how great this movie was. There was also surprisingly-decent humor between the two of them. My theater was laughing more than a few times at their exchanges.

Oh, and speaking of Ryan Gosling, they had callbacks to the other adaptation of a space novel by the same author (The Martian) and the big (not so smash hit) blockbuster he did before this, The Fall Guy. I don’t want to spoil it, but I’ll bet you already know which scene from THAT movie I’m talking about.

I know it’s early in the year, but this is at least a strong contender for best film of the year and definitely one of my better theatrical experiences in quite some time. Dune 3 is the only film with a realistic chance to top it.

Just saw this Friday night and agreed. Really enjoyed this movie way more than I thought I would and can't wait to watch it again.

I've also been watching the newest season of Scrubs. They really have nailed the pacing and style of the original series (everything before season 9). Loving it thus far.

Also got to see Studio Ghibli's Kiki's Delivery Service for the first time a couple of weeks ago. It's now one of my top favorite Ghibli films.
