A remake of the most popular game in the series is also a great way to reinvigorate interest in the franchise after a long hiatus. Why shouldn't they play it safe before delving into new territory?

I will have to disagree with one point here. The most popular game in the franchise was in fact the original 'Silent Hill', which sold 2 million copies as opposed to 'Silent Hill 2' which sold 1 million copies. 'Silent Hill 2' is the most beloved by the fans so it speaks volumes that they are remaking a fan favorite rather than trying necro a corpse that outsold it. My theory is that 'Silent Hill 2' was ahead of it's time in some ways and could reach out to a broader audience in 2024 especially with modernized gameplay features. All factors considered 'Silent Hill 2' remake could be one of the most significant titles in gaming, possibly even bigger than RE2R if everything goes well.

'Silent Hill' the 1st was a fantastic game but requires a high level of intelligence to fully grasp because the plot is very abstract (abstract thinking is the best marker for intelligence). The only reason it did so well was because it had gameplay like 'Resident Evil' but was much scarier and little to do with the plot ( father losing daughter is a great grabber to keep the player motivated at the beginning of the game but after that the average player became confused as to what is going on).

Also, reading these pages demonstrates volumes about Teen Tyrant: he certainly lives up to his name! He acts like a teen and tries to be a tyrant! (A weak tyrant but you can certainly smell the effort there, haha).

Yes and no. The first Silent Hill sold really well in Japan, but the second one did not. The second one however did really well overseas, and this trend continued for every game. In Japan, the series has never been that popular (besides the first game which was a huge hit), so for that reason it makes sense that they remade SH2 first because the Western market is simply their biggest market when it comes to Silent Hill. Of course there is a small but loyal fan base in Japan, but it's nowhere near as big as in North America and Europe.

Resident Evil however is really popular in Japan (as Biohazard).

Yeah Silent Hill 2 definitely seems, from what I heard, to have more Western (intuitive) themes, and as popular as it was, never really exploded in popularity like Resident Evil on both sides of the pond. More popular in the West =/= very popular in general. I really hope this game goes well and they expand on the series' potential. Who knows what could happen going forward. *Fingers crossed*.

1 million copies sold already. Looks like early reports were wrong and people with a funky agenda were spreading false /warped information.

Congratulations Boober Team! I predicted they could pull it off based on empirical data and am glad I was proven right! (Usually I am proven wrong haha). This should mean they can remake the first game.

Wish they would port this to Android, I would try it then. Capcom only ports to Apple so Konami should 1UP them and port games to all mobile devices.

Initial sales were strong but appear to have slowed down a bit (finally hit 2 million a short while ago).

I mean come on, if they want to compete with RE, you would think that they would not succumb to the allures of exclusivity nonsense (Capcom has long since dropped any notions of exclusivity deals, especially after the Mikami and Nintendo fiasco from 2001-2005).

For context, Xbox Series X has sold around 28.3 million units worldwide. If just 10% of those owners bought SH2R, that's an additional 2.83 million sales right there!

I understand the exclusivity deal is timed for a year, but it's always better to get the ball rolling early when hype is at peak, then once sales slow down they can turn their efforts on development of the next remake.

What was Konami thinking here? RE and SH are not Halo or Zelda and should be fairly distributed across the board.

Remake of Silent Hill the 1st confirmed!!!

This is going to be truly a stunner, I didn't even like SH2 when it was first released but I loved the first game. The remake of SH2 was great though so imagine what they (Bloober Team) could do with the first game!!

Unlike 2, which had no need for a remake, the first game does need at least a graphics update, although I know they won’t stop there.

You really are pushing this theory hard. Didn't I just say that I did not like Silent Hill 2 when it was first released? I thought it was dull and gave up early but loved the functionality and atmosphere of the remake and plowed through it in no time. (It was a bit short, unfortunately, I did not want it to end!).

Not everyone has an identical opinion, even people who were around since that time. ;)

Keep remaking these I say, had a blast.

Yes, I know what you said, but I am not concerned with what you said. You didn’t like the original version of Silent Hill 2, that’s fine; that tells me your sense of taste is terrible and you have no opinion worth hearing. Silent Hill 2 objectively did not need a remake. It is a victim of our current nostalgia culture of trying to get old fans excited by reminding them of things they used to love by making a new, unnecessary version of it to try (usually in vain) to recapture the magic, and to bring attention to newer people, which could be done just as easily by simply making a legitimately new entry in a series rather than remaking/rebooting past successes. I can get onboard with a remake of the original game on the grounds of outdated graphics that newer fans will not have an appreciation for, but that’s really the only thing that needs to be redone. Everything else about that game should be kept the same, down to the audio (although I’d also be ok if they shortened the spaces between sentences from the original). Otherwise, it’s just more nostalgia culture from a creatively bankrupt society so obsessed at looking back at what worked that they ruin the whole reason why it worked by trying to redo it in a modern light.
