Big thanks to everyone who participated in the other question... it went fabulously and many of you had fantastic input on the matter. I'll be locking the QotW threads as we go along, for no other reason but to keep people focused on the most recent one, although I might open it up later. If you want to continue the discussion, feel free to make a new thread about it, or use your visitor profiles to do so.

Without further regard, here's the second question of the week:

Read and comment on this short article. What do you think of the decision Constance's school made? Do you agree or disagree with its policy? Please explain your reasoning.

I understand that this might incite some very strong opinions, so all that I ask is that people be respectful and diplomatic in their answers and responses. This discussion ends on March 22nd. Happy posting!

Oh it's going to be tough for me. I don't want to misunderstand anything. Hopefully, the online dictionaries are going to be useful! :D

Ahh. There is a similar problem at my school. Two girls who are in a relationship, are not allowed to be voted for "Best Couple" at the senior prom this year. In protest, the students voted for them as "Best Couple" even though their names weren't on the ballot but the school still isn't allowing it. My school is a Catholic school and I think this goes against "the rules" :/

In short, I feel bad for this girl. She's most likely had enough stress accepting that she's gay (and coming out for that matter) in a school environment, this is just another reason for her to be hated on by some of her peers. However I think she should drop the lawsuit.

I like what this girl said though:

"I am a little bummed out about it. I guess it's a decision that had to be made. Either way someone was going to get disappointed — either Constance was or we were," Watson said. "I don't agree with homosexuality, but I can't change what another person thinks or does."

Also, I didn't think that schools needed to know in advance who was wearing what or who was taking whom? Is this something that's done in America? I presumed she could show up with whoever, because I know the two girls are allowed to go to the prom at my school and probably wear what they like, just not allowed to be voted Best Couple.

I'll probably come back to this when my brain isn't totally fried from work xD.

I thought this was a little weird too, but perhaps the other girl is not a senior? I know at my school if you want to bring someone that is not a senior, you have to buy them a special ticket.

To me though, I'm kind of disgusted by this. There is absolutely NO reason why the school could not have just stopped them at the door, instead of canceling the entire prom. Its not just specifically those two girls the district has a problem with, its basically them extending a giant middle finger to every teenage gay/lesbian, at the expense of the other students.

Then again, looking at the location (a small town in Mississippi run by conservatives), I'm not exactly surprised. It just makes me kind of sad that there are places in this country where people are still so close-minded and unaccepting of others.

Lordy lordy lordy. I really do hate it when the South do things like this. Most of these Southern folk seem stuck in the olden days for some reason. Why in the world would they want to ruin something for that girl? Just because she's a lesbian, and she wanted to show up in a tuxedo with her girlfriend. There is nothing wrong with that. Oh wait, yes there is, she's a lesbian. BAH! That is not a good enough excuse.

I just don't understand why people can't accept people for the way they are. Who gives a flyin' hoot whether they're gay or straight?? They're human beings just like the rest of us.

Those people in charge need a good kick up the backside, the fact of the matter is , gay/straight or bi, it doesn't make the slightest bit of difference in todays day and age, I mean you can walk out onto the street and see two guys kissing and you wouldn't even bat an eyelid because its normality now. Yes if this was 50 years ago I could see there being a problem but times change and so do the way people react. That couple have done absolutely nothing wrong in wanting to attend their prom, and the very fact its gone this far shows how simple minded and idiotic some people are.

Well, I think most people here have the same opinion as i do.
I think that kind of situatons are ridiculous. I mean, there's no reason for her to be treated that way. Noone has to tell me how i should dress or who i should take as a date.
Although non-straight people are becoming more and more accepted, there's still a lot of people who can't accept them. I have nothing against it, everyone has the right to free expression and to chose who they want as their dates/lovers/partners.
I don't have much more to say for now...

That poor girl. Just because she is a lesbian dosen't mean that she should be treated different. She should be treated like everyone else.

To answer the question, I highly disagree with the policy. There are alot of people who are lesbians and gays. There is no way to avoid them due to they are all over the place. You shouldn't treat them like trash or aliens, you should treat them like humans.

This quote turned out to be so ironic!

Personally I don't have anything to add. I agree with the others.

Yeah - the responses on YA were far more... erm, argumentative so I was expecting a bit of the same thing. I really wasn't expecting this unanimous agreement, heh. But then again, I think people who had a different opinion may have chose to skip out on this one.

Erm, we'll wait until next week. I forgot about it, and since it's already almost Thursday, I'll post a new one on Monday. When I have some idea of what to write.

What is "YA"?

I skipped for another reason. There was some things in the article that I didn't understand and I've been too tired and lazy to bother working on it.

I remember another case where girls weren't allowed to wear thongs (USA). Some teacher's and schools are still stuck in the 17th century.

That is true. And yeah playing RE and killing zombies all these years have made us see things differently! Viva RE!! :p

Ok. We will be waiting for next Monday! :D
