Ok, I gave in and played it - I've not played an RE game before but I thought I'd give this one a go seeing as it's more action than anything else. Have a few little irritations with it though, but I'm not sure if these are standard in all RE games or just this one.
Firstly, can't strafe. This annoys the hell out of me, particularly when the aiming is not so good compared to other action games and seems rather sluggish at times. Having to lower my weapon, shift slightly and then try to re-aim in a matter of seconds is a pain in the backside and I would have much preferred to have been able to simply strafe and shoot - much easier, much quicker.
I played this through on Professional (probably should have done Amateur for my first time, but Steve thinks that throwing me in the deep end is amusing ) and I also got ticked off with Jill Valentine when she's running around like a lunatic with that thingy stuck to her that makes her mental - for whatever reason, the commands would not work to dodge/grab/pull etc. Also, I don't like how you need to be dead on centre for a lot of the action commands to work. In small spaces, this meant lots of maneuvering like a learner driver on test day just to get in the right position to flick a switch or open a door. Which is fine so long as someone isn't throwing dynamite at you and one hit usually means one kill.
Plus, when fighting Wesker in that bit where you need to turn all the lights off and he runs after you, whenever he was restrained so I could inject him, I'd be standing in front of him ready, the grabbing sequence would initiate and then all of a sudden I'd find myself positioned behind him even though neither of us had turned around and by the time I'd got into place to inject him, he had run off again - I don't know if you get longer with the Amateur, Normal or Veteran levels but on Professional we had a couple of seconds only to position correctly and inject before he threw you off - this bugged me massively.
On the flip side, infinite ammo with a rocket lawnchair made very swift work of all the bosses (the final fight was over in about ten seconds although I missed out on punching a rock. Sad face) and didn't have to mess about with strategies for the most part (except Jill because the commands wouldn't work and Sheva kept getting killed with one punch when dodge wouldn't function). I still won't play the other RE games as survival horror isn't my thing, but I'll definitely play through RE5 again and considering this sort of game isn't what I usually go for, that can only be a good thing.
P.S. - uber pleased that I got the drive-by achievement, playing Professional, on my first attempt (when the motorbikes and trucks are chasing you) whereas Steve epic-failed many time on Veteran before he got it. Cue my smug face
