Ok, I gave in and played it - I've not played an RE game before but I thought I'd give this one a go seeing as it's more action than anything else. Have a few little irritations with it though, but I'm not sure if these are standard in all RE games or just this one.

Firstly, can't strafe. This annoys the hell out of me, particularly when the aiming is not so good compared to other action games and seems rather sluggish at times. Having to lower my weapon, shift slightly and then try to re-aim in a matter of seconds is a pain in the backside and I would have much preferred to have been able to simply strafe and shoot - much easier, much quicker.

I played this through on Professional (probably should have done Amateur for my first time, but Steve thinks that throwing me in the deep end is amusing ) and I also got ticked off with Jill Valentine when she's running around like a lunatic with that thingy stuck to her that makes her mental - for whatever reason, the commands would not work to dodge/grab/pull etc. Also, I don't like how you need to be dead on centre for a lot of the action commands to work. In small spaces, this meant lots of maneuvering like a learner driver on test day just to get in the right position to flick a switch or open a door. Which is fine so long as someone isn't throwing dynamite at you and one hit usually means one kill.

Plus, when fighting Wesker in that bit where you need to turn all the lights off and he runs after you, whenever he was restrained so I could inject him, I'd be standing in front of him ready, the grabbing sequence would initiate and then all of a sudden I'd find myself positioned behind him even though neither of us had turned around and by the time I'd got into place to inject him, he had run off again - I don't know if you get longer with the Amateur, Normal or Veteran levels but on Professional we had a couple of seconds only to position correctly and inject before he threw you off - this bugged me massively.

On the flip side, infinite ammo with a rocket lawnchair made very swift work of all the bosses (the final fight was over in about ten seconds although I missed out on punching a rock. Sad face) and didn't have to mess about with strategies for the most part (except Jill because the commands wouldn't work and Sheva kept getting killed with one punch when dodge wouldn't function). I still won't play the other RE games as survival horror isn't my thing, but I'll definitely play through RE5 again and considering this sort of game isn't what I usually go for, that can only be a good thing.

P.S. - uber pleased that I got the drive-by achievement, playing Professional, on my first attempt (when the motorbikes and trucks are chasing you) whereas Steve epic-failed many time on Veteran before he got it. Cue my smug face :D

Sounds like you had fun.:D

This game was way harder then Re4 i can always fly through that game on professional with ease then again i have been playing the game for years. This game did have its tidbits that were a real pain in the pooshoot, the real thing that bugged me was sheva she was a cool character but unnecessary i would've had 3 times more fun with Chris alone i just know it, its the custom of Resident Evil and even if it isn't scary the isolation is what makes the game fun.She kept distracting that big worm black boss thing before it went into the furnace i went around in about 15 circles lol.One more thing about sheva is i hated sharing my well earned equipment or when she stole my stuff, in coop its good but i don't like sharing to jerks who waste my stuff!

Also i wanted a merchant like in RE4 why did one of the coolest additions get cut out for some stupid menu thats not fun. They could've made some african dude in robes that works as a black market opperative or even blatently just had a shop branch theres shootings going down there everyday i'm sure guns are a very common thing to be across.

But your a real tough chick i went through on normal at first and i was getting kicked in the anus"WHY ISN'T THIS LIKE RE4!".Lol nah not that bad but it was like much harder, i haven't completed it yet but i'm not really compelled to either its a good game but i just get bored i'd rather beat Resident Evil 4 again.

How can you play Professional your first time without beating Veteran?

Your partner can take your stuff? Cool! That means that she can carry stuff too? Can you take a look into Sheva's inventory and take her stuff?

In RE4, I looked forward to rescue Ashley so she could carry a few things for me, only to discover that she's to no help whatsoever!

Sharing is cool, but I know that an AI tends to waste resources when they are in control of it.

The merchant in RE4 is good, actually he's too "good". I think it's rather silly that weapons can be upgraded that much. Upgrading firepower, firing speed and reload speed are for the most part silly unrealistic.
Upgrading magazine capacity makes some sense though. Except: How the hell do you upgrade the capacity on a revolver? Hello?!

Maybe it's not a bad thing if the merchant is missing in RE5. There are better (more realistic) ways to get better guns.

Good question. I believe the answer simply is that she's Angel. She appears to be an ordinary person, but she's got hidden powers and is omnipotent. :ninja:

Yeah she like steals your stuff off the floor sometimes, you usually give her the order but yeah it was a pain sorting ammo sometimes like i would want to go halves in the handgun bullets but then i have to grab the whole damn thing or nearly all of it!The sharing is annoying because sheva as an NPC i find pretty useless i don't like to share the goods with some non real player.

I don't care too harshly about realism though it was just really cool and who knows who drifts along the coasts of spain this guy looked like a freakin magician. The system in RE5 is less unrealistic anyway it was is just some menu where you get to upgrade and sell your stuff, i reckon if they added some african merchant it would've been way better. The upgrading is good though where would i be without my superpowered red nine, or striker with 100 bullets.:p

Steve already unlocked it and I played co-op with him. If I was left to my own devices, I'd never get passed the first bit. But Steve's mean and makes me play all co-op games on the hardest available difficulties first. But the achievements make me happy face, so there is something good to come from being thrown in the deep end

i have played all of the games from the very beginning i played zero through 5 and all the little side games everything. My major problem with this is there getting away from the reason i liked this game. I want a survival horror granted that means that i have to give a little to the action side so that the game is playable but this just spits in the face of all of the original fans. Also the inventory setup made me want to scream you have to be able to carry more items then just 9 at a time and i say 9 because if you give the AI any thing its gone in a few seconds.

they have made this into a shooting game like all of the other genres. when i think resident evil i want to think scary game that is going to suck me in. In my opinion and take that at face value ,im just a fan that has been with the series, if they keep going in this direction of the action game im not interested in playing future REs and i dont think many of the original fans will be either.

Yeah they claim there going to change the formula for the next Resident Evil because its getting old.All i hope for again is scaring the hell out of me and that isolation feel, the technology with graphics they have now there is not a better time to make a scary game and thats the problem this gen i haven't played one game on xbox 360 thats managed to scare me.

Problem is i doubt capcom even cares whatever is going to rake them the most money from a buisness stand point is what they will be going for.I don't expect old camera angles, its very possible to make the type of game they have now into a scary one they just need to aim for that if it wasn't for sheva this game would've been so much better and i guess it would've saved them time and money as well.

My main gripe is how they appeal to the older fans with"fear you can't forget" and start claiming bs on panicky fear but seriously any game can produce that panic its when you run out of ammo, need health or a bailing from someone...gears of war 2 gives me that sense. There was just no reason to stray so far they have these action elements but it doesn't work so much because they are also restricting it with the unabilty to strafe and such...its like there in a mix in between two so they can't unleash the better of one another.

Ahhh look at me whinge its all been said before greatly made game just needs the scares.

Which really didn't work in RE 5. I'd say it was even less realistic than in 4. I mean, at the end of every chapter there's just a screen where you can buy items and upgrades. I find it just so flipping boring, I'd much prefer the merchant.

I kinda liked the partner system, except for the few times my AI partner would unload a machine gun in the face of a boss, and then complain that (s)he was out of ammo.

But I would have liked it, if you could have left your partner behind every now and then, kinda like in RE0. But having to share ammo and equipment help making the game a bit more challenging, which is always good in my opinion.

Having said that, I do hope the next game is going to be without a partner, as I prefer playing without an AI partner in single player games, they're usually more trouble than they're worth.

Agreed, and RE5 is not the only one we can use as evidence either, like in Outbreak, the AI can prove to be a pain in the ass, and even pretty uncooperative..

The one in RE0 wasn't so bad though, since for the most part it was almost like you were controlling both of them anyway.:) But I do hope that the next one is a single person experience, not that I don't want an unintelligent AI to show up again, maybe in Mercs still have a Co-op experience, but the main game should be single player.:)

Yeah, I played all of them too. I agree with you, but for a strange reason I liked RE4 and still 5 is more of the same in some way (although part 4 was scarier)
My most favorite is RE2 with Claire and Leon. My god, we played that one with 6 friends in the dark and 1 of us had the map and 1 other played the game. The rest just watched as if they were seeing a horror flick. That time was unbelievable good! ;)

LOL! Hey Angel! Its me...Esura, from DMC.org

Anyways, RE5 is the first RE game I played too, although I have seen RE2 in action when I was little...and I was scared to death of it. Seeing Lickers almost made me pee my pants.

I started on Normal, but once I got to the chapter where you had to go to them islands and stuff on the boat, I quit and switched to Amateur. Seriously, those big arse tribal beasts with those big clubs are ultra lame to the Max Payne (Max Payne aint lame though, I just like saying that phrase). While in Amateur, I managed to max out the magnum and after I beaten Amateur, I unlocked inf ammo for it and owned Normal mode, and I'm owning Veteran mode with it too.

This game would of been such a pain in my arse if I didnt have inf ammo.

I think Resident Evil 5 is very easy, the professional mode is what I call WTF? You're walking happy, and there comes a majini. He sees you and bang, 'I'M NOT GONNA MAKE IT'.

The game was somehow easy, but the trophies are really hard to get and annoying. I finish it on veteran on my first time, but still I couldn't do it in Professional mode. I had to ask for help, and Kellyrose helped me, otherwise I couldn't do it. I needed inf ammo.
