Silent Hill remained more-or-less true to its' origins(, unlike RE, which sacrifised the horror for more action.)
However disbanding Team Silent was a bad move from Konami.
Vatra Games tried the best they could, to make Downpour a good Silent Hill game. And -in my opinion- they did a great job, concidering, that they are a relatively rookie developer team. Downpour had very good ideas, but it lack the twisted ideas Team Silent brought into the franchise. (For example the creatures in SH1-3 were so grotesque that scared the living hell out of me, while in Downpour many of them look too anthropomorph/humanoid, and that made them less scary....at least that's what I think)
Daniel Licht also composed a nice soundtrack. So he was kind of a good subtitution for Akira Yamaoka.
The best entries in the series were -I think - SH1,2,3. The Room was horrible, with its' ridiculously easy puzzles, and dull control system. I haven't played Homecoming, but from what I've heard, I didn't miss out much.
