@Turo602 I spent so much time with God of War when I was younger. Good times.:cry:

I've actually never been the biggest fan of God of War, though admittedly, I never got to play much. I played the 2 PSP prequels on PS3, but by the time I started part 1, about halfway through, my PS3's disc drive stopped reading discs. I've enjoyed the games but they're a little repetitive. God of War 3 was actually the one I was interested in most when I got a PS3, never got to work my way up to it, unfortunately.

Part 1 has been hard to find on PS2 though for some reason. I actually goofed hard and bought part 2 twice because that stupid logo doesn't make the II very clear and I saw it again thinking it was the first one but all I was paying attention to was if the disc was scratched and if the artwork was in good condition.

Well, I wouldn't call Resident Evil or Batman repetitive. Both series are definitely formulaic, but I think there's enough variety in their formula that prevents it from getting repetitious, whereas God of War is just hacking and slashing at the same enemies over and over again. Though, I'm basing that solely on the 2 PSP games, which were still fun btw. I have no idea how the series has progressed from game to game though.

Yeah, but I've always felt like God of War was never as deep as games like Devil May Cry and Bayonetta when it comes to combat or even mixing up the gameplay. Maybe I'm wrong and I haven't played it enough, but I feel like it's a lot more simplistic and reliant on big quick time event moments to make the game epic. I know with Bayonetta, it always feels like the game is introducing new elements to you and it always gets better and better.

This, I feel like, is the problem with gaming today. People want everything to be deep, they want everything to be more and not everything needs and/or has to be. I feel like gamers ask for entirely too much and it's absolutely ridiculous.

God of War is exactly what it was promoted to be: a hack and slash and it doesn't try to be anything else.

I don't think gamers ask for too much (well, it really depends on the scenario), but my criticism comes more from the fact that the franchise itself is so overrated. God of War is fine the way it is. I'm not saying it needs to be like DMC or Bayonetta. But when games like Devil May Cry 3 and Bayonetta come along and elevate the genre, they don't get nearly the same attention.

I think it's because the genre doesn't need to be elevated. It's hack and slash; you are supposed to hack and slash and that's it, that's why it's called that. God of War is an amazing example of a game that doesn't need to be overly complicated to be great, it is what it is. It doesn't presume to be deep or attempt to be excessive: it is the genre in its purest form.

I also feel like it's a bit obtuse to not only form an opinion on an entire series when you have yet to play one main game in the series and instead the two portable port prequels, but to subsequently criticize the series because of portable titles. (Which, no offense to portable games - and I can't personally speak on these as I haven't had the chance to play them yet - but are, in my experience, usually at a lower quality than console titles.)

This makes me want to play the new one, to be honest. But adulting must be done first.:cry:
 
I low-key want to give my genuine thanks to whatever god is out there that for some reason, despite failing time and again with these franchises, that Nintendo keeps giving Star Fox and Metroid many chances.

Two of my absolutely favorite series of all time which have sat in dev hell for years at multiple points, and when they do have games, it's a 50/50 with what you get. Despite all that I'm really happy that Nintendo doesn't drop them like many companies would.

The fact that Prime 4 got a restarted development rather than outright canceled was the nicest thing ever.
Although the lore keeper in me desperately wants to know what they scrapped.

I was 55% through the first game before the system crapped out on me. But I'm basing my judgment from what I've played, what I've seen of the other games, and what I've heard from people I trust. I wouldn't discredit the PSP games though. I don't recall them feeling any different than what I played of the first game, which is where my criticism comes from. It just started feeling monotonous.

But I agree though, I don't think God of War needs to be anything else, but I disagree about the hack and slash genre not needing to be anything more than that. While every game doesn't need to bring something new to the table to be enjoyable or even great, no genre is ever above redefining or evolution. I mean, where would gaming be without Street Fighter II, Super Metroid, Super Mario 64, Ocarina of Time, or Halo? Games should always strive to be more than the bare minimum.

However, I think I'm just being harsh on God of War because of how obnoxious Playstation fanboys have been as of late, acting like they have the greatest exclusives even though exclusives don't drive the majority of console sales (but don't tell them that).

But yeah, I don't mean to say God of War is awful and repetitive beyond enjoyment. If anything, I think God of War's innovation has always been its large scale boss fights and cinematic action sequences. But I'm just kind of sick of the hype. Then again, I've probably been spoiled by playing newer and better games first, because at this point, I'm just itching to play God of War 3 and the new God of War. But they'll have to wait a while longer, unfortunately.

Also, I just want to say, I love how we can just talk about God of War without feeling like we've derailed the thread. Definitely a great thread as I've always wanted people around here to talk about other games without threads just falling into obscurity.

Is there any games you guys have played that have been so frustrating that after you beaten it you decided to never touch it again? Because if I ever finish the Moon dungeons in Majora's Mask I will never touch it again

Yes.

A little off topic, but as for games I didn't finish:

Forbidden Siren is the first to come to mind. I'm honestly not sure how close I came to beating it and I never will, because screw that.

I also didn't finish Outlast 2 because Outlast in general scares me. I'm pretty sure I beat the first one but I couldn't do the second one.

I also haven't beaten Breath of the Wild yet because I refuse to cheat lol.

And the list that I did finish:

I never played RE3 after the first time I beat it but not because I couldn't beat it, I just didn't like it.

I probably won't play God of War (the new one) again, simply because of the Valkyrie trophy and Niflheim. Don't get me wrong, it's one of my all time favorite games, but the Valkyrie queen fight was ridiculous.

Kind of on the same topic, I've found myself playing a LOT less REmake 2 since obtaining the two Hardcore trophies. All I need for Platinum now is to collect all the files and beat the Sherry puzzle room in less than a minute. This is probably a good thing though, as that time is better spent studying for my next certification lol.
 
It was pretty cool the other day. I've always kind of hidden the fact that I'm a gamer; I've always feared being ostracised from friendship groups, or looked at in derision or ridiculed by people by admitting it.

However, since starting my job a year ago, I've come out of my shell with it more, at least at work. There's a girl on my team who enjoys gaming and even brings her Switch with her to work to play on lunch. We're not really into the same games, but it's cool because we both talk about what we're into.

One day we were talking about gaming, and one of the new girls who I'm becoming friends with asked if I played as a kid. I said yeah, I grew up with games. We then had a big group discussion about gaming and found that quite a few of us played some of the same games as kids.

This isn't something that happens often with me; I don't find common ground with people that easily. But it was nice to just relax and talk about something I'm interested in and maybe not have to hide that part of me so much.
 
I wonder when they'll finally announce guest characters for Mortal Kombat 11. Ed Boon did say a familiar face and actor will appear, and there's a new Terminator film coming out later this year, so the T-800 Terminator will almost assuredly be one of them especially with time travel being involved in the story and whatnot.

Pennywise is also likely to be one of them since It Part 2 comes out this year and the last 2 MK games already gave us Freddy, Jason and Leatherface for horror movie characters.

I think it is SUCH a waste of a character slot in MK11 to just keep giving us these horror icons. We know that Spawn is going to be in the game which is awesome. But they have so many characters from the series they could add and they are wasting our time with extra horror enemies. Sure, give us a few, but MKX had WAY too many!
 
Ya know. I genuinely wonder what goes through the heads of the people who play generally pretty good - Great even.
But then they see that one character they just despise and it’s such a powerful hatred they just lose their game sense.

Smash players are genuinely fascinating creatures.

Not stopping me from using best girl tho.

I'm not really sure what Bethesda is planning for The Elder Scrolls 6. That developer video they recently published showcases what seems to be a new engine, but Todd Howard recently stated that they don't plan to abandon their Creation Engine anytime soon.

Thing is, the Creation Engine SUCKS, and if that's what they're using for TES6 we should expect something similar to the disaster that was Fallout 76. The engine itself is 9 years old, but since its source code was forked from the Gamebryo Engine in Fallout 3 we're actually talking about source code written in 1997 that's 22 years old. It simply cannot sustain modern graphics and hardware requirements.

Halo's new slipspace engine is still working off of the original blam engine Bungie created so that Halo: Infinite feels like a Halo game. Could be the same situation. Doesn't mean it hasn't been updated.

I know nothing about Halo, but perhaps their developers are better are renewing their source code. Bethesda are known for their large amount of bugs and glitches.
 
I love the Nintendo Switch, don't get me wrong. But there are a few things I find quite annoying with it.

Something that really annoyed me today was when I wanted to save a clip to share to my Twitter, and it wouldn't fit into the thirty seconds that the Switch allows you to capture. Seriously, thirty seconds? That's hardly any time at all.
