Should universities ask about sexual orientation?

Meg

So bin ich eben
I read this article here, http://news.yahoo.com/college-first-u-ask-applicants-sexual-orientation-172003423.htmlwhich stated that a college out in Chicago somewhere now requires students to say whether or not they are part of the LGBT community. Reasons they gave being they want those students to feel welcome on campus and such.

What do you guys think? Is it ok for universities to ask students something so personal and if so what about the workplace, where we might be seeing it next?

It's No One Else's Business What One Person's Sexual Tastes Are. It Only Concerns That Person And The One They Are Sleeping With As Far As I Am Concerned, Not The School.

Stick them tags as well to make their lives easier! People will avoid certain rejections this way! duh

in other words, no

Yeah, knowing who's gay and who isn't is a good way to stop the spread of homosexuality. Can't catch the disease if you know who has it! (Quote from a gay friend)

I don't buy the whole 'we want to make applicants feel welcome' schtick. If you want your LGBT students to feel welcome, then you hold LGBT-friendly events on campus. Having them list their sexual orientation will only make it that much easier for some bigoted jackass to decide to turn them away on the basis of it. When applying for academic institutions and workplaces, your credentials and appropriate qualifications SHOULD, by all rights, be all that matters.

I didn't go to collage but I dont think so, thats innapropriate. It kinda seems like sexual interrogation to me.

That college is perverted (and this is one of the rare occasions where I don't say it as a compliment). It is not their business what sexual, political, religious, or whatever orientation a student has. I have always been sensitive and easily upset by authorities and persons who exercise power if they abuse their power or are unfair in any way or another. But the good thing with abusive management, is that I can kick their legs and step on their toes without feeling bad about it later. I don't respect anyone for their position alone, so if they don't deserve it then I might let them know. (Might sound too rude to people from other cultures, but Norway is a classless society.)

I don't know how I would react if I was asked such questions at a college or uni, because it would be unheard of and it's illegal to ask such questions here. But if it was not illegal and if I was prepared for it, then I would give them value for their money. I guess I would have asked the interviewer the same questions back.

Not cool man, not cool...College, work, school, the jail cell, no matter where you are, you should not have to give out information like that...If you choose to, then so be it...Is it wrong for them to ask...To a degree yes, but if it's a simple yes, no, or they give you the chance to not answer then i guess it's a LITTLE more acceptable...What is wrong would be forcing it out of them, saying they can't go to school here otherwise...I mean, if you're proud of your sexuality, then I don't see a problem with answering yes, but if your not, or if you're scared, or whatever reason, then if you want to keep it to yourself then that's you're right as a human being. In closing, should the collage ask? No. Is it their right? Yes. Is it their right to FORCE and/or USE IT AGAINST student and staff. NO...

While I dont care who knows my sexuality and I wear it quite openly, as said throughout the topic, a school should not be asking this. Now if students want to make clubs and stuff, go ahead, have a blast.
