Question of the Week #12: Is pop culture going into the gutter or are we just getting older?

It's definitely becoming stupid and decreasing in quality.
I blame it on the stupid Kartrashians/Jenners, those ET shows, and sites like TMZ. Horrible. Once on a site the top story was that Kim Kartrashian went bowling and the second top story was that a person was murdered. Also, there was a thing for most influential teens, and it was a bunch of unimportant people, including Kendall and Kylie Jenner, against Malala Yousafzai. How did they make the same list as someone as amazing as Malala?
End of short rant. xD

I'm 17 but if hating stupid and pervert stuff is outdated, then yes... I'm old...
I hate what you call "this century"...
Don't get me wrong I like new stuff but this pop culture thingy is ****ing our real culture off...

Pop culture? Coming from a rural place in a country in the outskirts of Western civilization, I know only fragments of it. Let's see what the definition is.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Popular_culture
"Popular culture or pop culture is the entirety of ideas, perspectives, attitudes, images, and other phenomena that are within the mainstream of a given culture, especially Western culture of the early to mid 20th century and the emerging global mainstream of the late 20th and early 21st century. Heavily influenced by mass media, this collection of ideas permeates the everyday lives of the society. The most common pop culture categories are: entertainment (movies, music, TV), sports, news (as in people/places in news), politics, fashion/clothes, technology and slang.

Popular culture is often viewed as being trivial and "dumbed down" in order to find consensual acceptance throughout the mainstream. As a result, it comes under heavy criticism from various non-mainstream sources (most notably religious groups and countercultural groups) which deem it superficial, consumerist, sensationalist, or corrupt.
"

I believe there has always been bad taste elements, it's nothing new. Perhaps bad taste is getting more common? I don't know since I only care to listen/watch things I enjoy.
I have always found a lot of the things they send on TV to be crap and I avoid it.

I don't know if popular culture itself is getting worse - I mean, I think Game of Thrones is the best thing since sliced bread and I can turn on the radio and easily find new songs that are enjoyable to listen to, etc etc, but I definitely believe it's being harmed by the prevalence of 'selfie culture'. Don't get me wrong - I think most teenagers are inherently narcissistic and have always been, but I also believe the transition of a cell phone from a tool used in emergencies to a device that most young people need to function (or at least say they need to function) accounts for a lot of it. How many young people will pay $$$ to go to a concert, only to watch it through their cell phone and then rush off to Facebook to post it?

I guess I find this desperate need to photograph or film every mildly exciting moment of one's life for the sole purpose of showboating on Facebook has more to do with a perceived decline in pop culture, more so than a decrease in the quality of music, film, and television.

^On that note, I'm so glad I wasn't born during this time. I mean I can't see my parents doing it, but I would still hate to think about every single moment of my childhood being forever immortalized on the internet. (Not to mention that, with all the perverse, depraved people out there, is posting intimate photos of your children on the internet really a good idea?)

Before I start, one interesting trend with pop culture in the older generation is always turning up their nose. It even happened with The Beatles.

The only other trend with pop culture over time is that it's constantly trying to trump and turn on its self. Beatles promoting love? Bring out Led Zeppelin and the hard Rock of the 70s. Rock too grimy? Bring out the glam rock. Grunge to the heavily computerized 00s rock and hip hop and so on. I'm using music as an example, but I think it applies to all trends.

I am of the belief that everyone hating on the current pop culture is merely old enough to notice this, but lacks the insight to see that they are just becoming their parents. When I was a kid, Blink 182 was considered lewd. Not so much now that groups like MSI have come along. Without a nostalgia factor, who knows. Maybe they wouldn't be so special if I didn't know every lyric by heart.

Most pop bands don't wind up being timeless but every generation seems to get their equal share of legends. I'd submit that as evidence that pop culture is not decaying. On that note, fashion trends tend to look equally ridiculous in retrospect.

I wouldn't say pop culture is any better or worse now than it was in the past. It's just different.

It's not pop culture that has changed really. I mean it is, but not on it's own. It's due to the advances in technology. A lot of what is pop culture now is the type of stuff we couldn't say out loud in public. But thanks to being anybody we want to be on the internet, we aren't as afraid to be cruel, crass, and well...human...

It's definitely true that it's all grown along with technology, each trying to take full advantage of the other.

Do you think pop culture has become increasingly lewd and graphic because the technology allows it, or because we're constantly being desensitized enough for the next phase?

To be fair, the technology is what allows us to be desensitized...
