There's actually a way to completely avoid Steve's attacks, but I guess your problem's solved already.

Here's the trick:

When the cutscene ends, go near his left(note: his left, not yours) and make him swing downward. Make sure you quickly rush to his right this time before you get hit, then try and go around him from that spot. He'll probably swing at you sideways once you're at his right side, so once you go around him you won't get hit and you'll have enough time to run.
