In an ideal system i don't think any drug should be illegal. I believe proper education(whether you can afford it or not) over suppression is the key.People who become addicted to drugs because it is an escape from pain to pleasure. I'm sure you guys have heard of Endorphins? If not, it is what produces the feelings of joy, love, elation and pleasure. Drugs like cocaine or heroin release these chemicals at extremely high rates. What isn't discussed is that the connection from Parent to Child, Endorphins is the dominant chemical in the child in these moments. If people didn't receive that need of the parent to child connection, guess what happens when someone takes there first shot of heroin? Its like being held or loved for the first time. This is just 1 example of the problem of addiction.
I'm against restriction, punishment and law because it fails to resolve the core issues. Addicted users generally come from a troubled background and throwing them in jail or an asylum only serves to prolong and increase violence. I have seen the devestation resulting from drug use in full front view but it was clear the drugs only served as a symptom to cover up the original problems. That person without a doubt reached the peak of insanity but he is now 100% clean and sane. And had he not received support or help and was left alone, he would be dead or in an asylum now. It is a very scary thought to think if he did turn out in an asylum, but others in the world unfortunately have been given that 'treatment'.
Dr. Gabor Mate is really good on the discussion of the social causes of addiction and human behaviour in general. Worth looking up.
