Care to discuss feminism?

Very interesting - thank you :)

It's been an interest of mine lately, cultural differences and interpretations thereof. I suppose I've always considered the possibility that when in the media (TV, films etc) the characters cite the whole "you come into our country and try to force your ways on us" thing, it may just have some truth to it.

It's also interesting to me that what is considered the norm or acceptable or even honourable in some cultures is verging on anathema for others. Tradition is strong in a lot of countries - something I think perhaps more than a few people in the west don't fully appreciate because there's just not the same level of adherence to tradition, if at all.
Thing is female genital mutilation causes serious health concerns. Some women can very have kids. Many experience ridiculous pain during birth as well as just pain like all the damn time. The procedure can also lead to infection and even death.

My views on it are mixed. I can understand women wanting more rights and less hate, but women have more rights now then ever. In ancient times, women were viewed as not equal. Not as superior as men. Now, they're a part of society. Mostly equal, though there are still many sexists.

I'm with L on this one...My feelings are mixed...

I defend women and speak up for their rights all the time...I'm a very feminine man, and other guys don't tend to respond well to me, so I have MANY more female friends than male...I tell guys all the time that "Women can do anything you guys can do, but they can do it while wearing high heels"...Any guy with a brain knows the conversation ends there...

However, women have an nearly equal rights today, and it's nowhere NEAR as bad as it was 50 years ago, let alone in ancient times...There are those guys AND girls that are just flat out sexist...But most guys don't view girls as just tools for children anymore...There are the extremists who feel they do though, and they give you other feminists a bad name...I've met my fair share as well...

I'm old fashioned in a sense...I believe the man should ALWAYS pay for the meal or the date...Not as a show of power over women...The opposite in fact...Showing that women are powerful and entrancing enough to make men WANT to do this sort of thing...Hold doors open, pay for meals, surprise with a gift...And if a women is saying that she deserves to be treated like an equal male and that one wouldn't do this for another male, that to ME is saying "I want you to treat me as low as you do other men and ignore the fact that I AM worthy of all you're trying to do for me"...

At the end of the day...I don't consider myself a feminist...But I consider myself VERY anti sexism...I'll always be there to support women's rights...But I'll be RIGHT there to support the rights of males as well..

That's what feminism is. :/
In today's sense of the word yes, as pointed out earlier...But because most people don't realize this, I don't feel I should call modern day feminism "Feminism"...I'm with Angel...It needs another name...To many people already have a different idea of feminism in their heads...

I don't believe in changing the name just because people are idiots. I believe in changing people's perception of it.

Changing people perception is brilliant...And frankly...I won't lie...I would change the name just cause it seems faster...Not because it's "right"...Suppose that's where the issue lies eh...

For some reason I imagined you saying this like a politician... MEG 2016! :p I agree with this point on many levels other than feminism. A lot of things shouldn't change for people, people need to change to make the world go round. ;)

Oh, of course. Feminism is a relatively Western construct - and although there are some movements towards gender equality in what we would consider more oppressive societies, you can't take the Feminism we have here and assume it applies universally - at least not at the same time. Its obviously easier to apply in a democracy than a totalitarian regime or something to that effect.

And then you have to consider cultural practices as well. When we talk about genital mutilation, we are talking about a practice we see as completely immoral and degenerate. I've had guest speakers in class though, who come from these countries and have considered it honourable. Who is wrong and who is right? If she believes it isn't oppressive, is it or isn't it? Or does it not matter what they think, because they are the Other and we know what's right for them?

It all comes down to whether one believes morality is universal or not.

I know this is a late reply but DAYUM! Smart, has a sense of humor AND* attractive *applauds*

'' Feminism was established to allow unattractive women easier access to the mainstream. ''
Rush Limbaugh

Couldn't have put it better myself.....

Woah. I don't think you could quote an individual with a more deep-rooted and obvious hatred for the opposite sex than Rush Limbaugh. I can't even call him a pig because I'd be insulting all the pigs around the world.

What i find funny about old Rush, is that he fancies himself an old school man. In his moral crusade, he lacks morals.....lol...
