Can you play a Region 2 DVD on a North American PS3?

This might be a stupid question but... I have issues.

There's a DVD I've been trying to find for months now... but the few Region 1 versions I've found either go for upwards of $60 or don't ship to Canada. There are plenty of Region 2 (UK) versions for relatively cheap... but I'm unsure of whether a Region 2 DVD will play on my NA PS3. A friend had said that the PS3 is region-free, but another person said only the PS3 games and blu-rays are regionless and thus I am confused. The DVD I want to buy isn't a blu-ray, though. Can anyone clear this up?

The PlayStation 3 is region free for all PS3 games. However, backward compatibility modes (i.e. PlayStation 1 and 2 games) are region locked. Blu-ray Disc and DVD region codes are also enforced.

Thats what it claims on the wiki but i've done google searches and all the information is contradictory .

Yeah, I've been having that problem - every website tells me something different, haha.

DVD region 1 is only Canada and USA. Strange they would not ship to Canada.

Unless the DVD/Blu-ray player in your PS3 is region free, movies ordered from Europe will not work.

Blu-ray have different and fewer regions than DVD. All of the Americas are in zone A, and Europe, Africa and Australia are in zone B.
