This is a syntax error.
Theorically, division and multiplication have the same order of priority, but as the division is in first place, it should be the first operation, so (6/2).(1+2)=9. However, as there's no "x", "*" or "." between the 2 and the (1+2), i'd interpret the 2 as being coefficient to (2+1), thus i'd interpret it as being 6/(2(1+2))=1.
As a future engineer, i use maths a lot, and it is very useful in many areas of science. Mathematical models are oftenly used to interpret (or try to) natural phenomena.
