So, has anyone here played the other Mikami horror shooters?

With the announcement of The Evil Within 2 there has been a small reemergence of interest in the title, but back in the day of TEW uno most RE fans I talk to about it responded to me with a pretty clear amount of disinterest, dismissal, disgust, disapproval and dis... infectant. I'm also talking about the other Shinji Mikami game, Shadows of the Damned, which was his first game after leaving Platinum. The thing is, these games feel like they have a closer connection to what made RE kinda what they are. SotD plays the way I think RE5 should've have; they nailed what the follow up to RE4 should've played like. With TEW I got a bit more of an atmosphere but what really screamed RE to me was Mobius, the villainous corporation, It's what Umbrella should feel like.

Personally I loved them both but, like I said, most RE fans I talked to back when each released really hated them, so I'm curious, as a RE community, have any of you played either of the games? What did you think of them if you did?

I don't even know why people hate Shadow of the Damned so much, That game is great. I love it to pieces, I've always thought that it was underrated.

Well, I talked about it on the Evil Within forum extensively.

I'll save you long read and just give you my most condensed interpretation of my opinion. All in all, I liked it. It's a visually interesting, creative, and interesting game. It's a bit more accessible than the first game since it's not as sadistically unforgiving. It's still not a game for everyone so if you're on the fence I'd advice you wait till the price is something you'd be willing to risk on a game you might not like. The game took me around 15 hour with a lot of exploring and doing all the side quests.

My biggest complaint is the dialogue. It's awful, just awful, which is weird because the story itself is pretty good, it's just that the dialogue and a lot of the scenes are atrocious. As an example of what I mean, if you're curious, just watch the first chapter on youtube. That opening scene is so bad it's SyFy original quality. But despite of that, the story is not half bad, kinda intriguing, actually.

It's important to note that this is not a Resident Evil game. Just because it's made by a lot of the people who made RE4 and REmake doesn't mean it will play like RE4. It has similarities but people shouldn't approach it like it one, nor expect it to be one or they'll just be frustrated and disappointed.

I miss bad voice-acting, I am all for this.
Looking back on it, I actually kinda dug the PS2-era survival horror kind of flaws in the first Evil Within, even if I wasn't really supposed to.

I loved the first one, but I'll have to wait to play the second, unfortunately.
I'm relieved to hear (well, read) that the game is visually interesting, I expected it to be better than the first one in that department (based on what I saw in the trailers and the gameplay videos).
Also, I agree on the fact that this game is not RE and should not be viewed as such, I think that this kind of comparison is what made a lot of people dislike the first one.
I'm kind of surprised about the dialogue though - I'm going to check on that on youtube as soon as I can, as you suggested! Again thank you, for sharing your opinions.

not nearly as much as the classic resident evil games
but they are great games either way

I´ll eventually get TEW2, i´m just not in the mood for that kind of jazz right now, maybe next year. I played Vanquish once at a friends house a long time ago, man that game was goood.

I'm currently playing through TEW2. It's much better than the 1st game imo. It's not as linear, has bigger open areas and side quests along with the story.

I'd definitely recommend it.
