The new forum look

I have to say I was pleasantly surprised when I viewed the forum. I myself prefer darker looks.
Also the new tab settings seem fine but I think the game forums should still remain individual, although it does take up a lot of space that way so I can see the grounds for that change.
Perhaps the latest entry (most discussed) in the main series having its seperate forum would prove to be a fitting solution for this.
I know people usually have trouble accepting new things but what does everyone else think?

I don't have an issue with it. It's not really a WHOLE Helluva lot different than the last model. However, I do thin that RE:Revelations should be part of the Main Series area, rather than spin-offs...Revelations WAS a Spin Off.

Granted it is cannon BUT it's also considered a Spin-Off. Like Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops. it happened jut not like in the game.

Regarding the new look it slightly makes my ye itch but its a nice touch

I honestly view Revelations as I do Code Veronica; not numbered but still part of the main series as it does connect with main timeline events and characters. (Of course I don't see it as anything to squabble over either as its place in the subsections is of no real consequence.)

Love the changes, Steve. ;)

Sounds like a plan to me. To be honest, I hurriedly put together the new Resi forums layout on my test installation, and then didn't bother to refine it before making it live here. It'll receive its due attention after I've finished ironing out a few other bugs which were missed prior to porting over the new template. Also: migrating over 1,000 news posts and guides from the old site (which was using WordPress) over to XenForo (the forum software) is going to take a while. :(

I was really torn about that one, as well as the Code Veronica forum. One could argue that virtually every Resi game is 'canonical' in one way or another, if only because Capcom made them and hasn't really labelled any games as 'what if'-type scenarios. It's likely that I'll do away with the Canonical/Spin-Offs categories once we've come up with something better suited.

Replace "Canonical" with "Main" leaving only the numbered titles there and problem solved.
All games besides Operation Raccoon City and Gaiden are Canon or at least Semi-Canon so I suggest the "Main" and "Spin-Off" distinction here.

I will say, I do like the new look, but what I really love the most is that I can finally save drafts. Thank you so much Steve, I can't tell you how useful this is for me when I want to send a message and I either have to stop or my computer restarts every single tab and makes me lose my message in the process.

Like the new look of the forum, just wish more people were here like back when RE6 was coming out lol.

I visit the forums on my phone (like I an now)
And it's a lot easier to see things (especially when I'm typing)
So whoever did this I award them with a super cookie!

(Cookie)

No one else take it, I will know!!!

Edit:
although it seems like I can no longer see who made the last reply on the thread page, I would prefer it come back.
Also even though it's easier to read it does feel a little more cramped like the text is too big. For example my name doesn't even fit on the tab xD

One last thing:
Is revelations considered a spin off? Or is that just preference?

Ninja edit:
That's cool how when people quote walls of text it doesn't show the whole section unless you press it. That will save my thumb scrolling! :D

Love the new look too, and I like how it's easier to see what I'm typing on my phone. I do kinda miss seeing which thread was last commented on in each category, but that's just my personal thing and not a necessity. Great work!

'Main' does sound much more appropriate. We'll likely get 'Canonical' changed to that if there aren't any better suggestions in the meantime.

In truth, I'd completely forgotten about that feature being introduced. There's supposedly quite a few additional little improvements made to the software that you'll likely uncover over time. One of the new features which I was most excited about was the new mobile-friendly responsive design. I haven't owned a mobile phone in about 5 years, but I recently took out a Nokia Lumia 720 on contract, and it was a pain in the backside to navigate -- or 'pinch' -- the old template with a phone, so I'm really pleased with the additional compatibility that comes with the forum upgrade.

Same. Hopefully we'll be able to get this place nice and lively again in no time. If you'd like to help, 'Like' us on Facebook and tell your chums about us. <3

It's one of the few limitations imposed on mobile browsing, sadly. When viewed on something high resolution, all of those links are still present, but for the sake of mobile phones' tendency to adapt slimmer, lower resolution displays, anything non-essential is hidden. :(

Regarding Revelations: It's probably better suited to the 'Canonical' category right now, but the whole thing needs revising so I'm not in a race to move across individual forums for the time being.

Awwww that's a shame but I guess it's not a massive deal. The threads title turns bold when a new reply is made and I get notifications if I have a direct comment so I guess I'm not missing out on too much

I'm usually not a fan of changes, but I like this! I like the new font on the main page. I see a number of other changes, and what makes me really grateful is that I can now type a post and see what I type. Since we got this lovely dark theme, I have had to compose posts in Word and paste it onto the forum because the text was nearly invisible. I never used the rich text editor, I prefer simple BB-code. Now I can see the bright characters I type on an almost black background. Lovely! It completely removes a big pain in my backside that I've had to live with until now.

The main forum page is now smaller and we don't have to scroll much. I like that, but the drawback is that we don't see if there's been new posts in forums. I miss the ability to from the main page see that. It's an example of how improving one thing causes a not so good side-effect. I don't know if there's a way to make an improvement without this side-effect? I think I value the ability to see the name of the latest thread over a smaller page.

Is it possible to have an indicator under our names telling if we are online or not? I mean in forum threads.

My resolution is 1024 x 768 which was the old PC standard. It should be high enough to not miss anything?

While this does seem like it would work Albert, just because it's not a numbered game doesn't mean it's not a "Main" game. I mean, RE:CV is most definitely a main game. I think it's fair to say that Revelations is too, considering the fact that it correlates with the main story. I mean, Gaiden and ORC aren't cannon because they contradict the main series. In Gaiden Leon dies, contradicting the later main cannon game, RE4. In ORC there are MULTIPLE events that contradict the main story, and Capcom even stated it was a non-cannon "what if" game. While changing it from "Cannon" to "Main" is a better Idea, it still needs to be decided what the "Main" games are. And I know RER was originally just released on a hand held, but that doesn't make it any less cannon. Plenty of companies have released games on hand held systems that were canon, and part of the main story.

You could also even throw the CG movies in there since they are cannon if we are talking about the main story...
putting RE: Degeneration between RE4 and RER, and RE Damnation after RE5 and before RE6.

Yep, you got a valid point but what I was going for here was making it so that noone has something to complain about. See CVX and Revs can be considered main by some but can also not be considered by others whereas the numbered titles are undoubtably main, and anything that doesn't have a number qualifies as spin-off by Capcom's rules anyway, hence I'd say that would be the optimal way of dividing them.

While I'm sure Revelations' status in main continuity could be debated, and probably debated well, Code Veronica's cannot. Period. It was even promoted as the true third installment to the series, taking presidence over Nemesis.

Just wanted to say I like the changes, Mr. Steve. I think the games grouped makes the forums easier to navigate. It's way less daunting than having to scroll through all this stuff trying to find the game you are looking for.

:D

Fun fact: The 'new' font we have in use right now for individual forum links was actually present in the previous template - sort of. Only I could see it, unfortunately, because I had inadvertently uploaded all template files except the necessary font files. Whoops. The previous skin was broken in so many ways, it really was a very poor first effort in skinning the forum software to suit a 'darker' vibe. There's still a few bugs here and there with this template, but way, way fewer and less worrisome than those present in the previous template.

I'm looking into incorporating the 'New!' post notifications for the individual Resident Evil forums, also; I'll see if I can get on top of that tomorrow. I don't imagine it'll be too difficult. For the time being, I'd encourage everyone to keep on top of new posts by using the 'Unread Posts' link in the navigation bar at the top of the screen.

Regarding online status: did we have that before? I can't remember... but, if we did, then it should be very easy to re-implement. I'll look into that tomorrow, along with the new posts notification thingy.

I view the forum from my PC monitor (resolution: 1920 x 1080) and from my Windows phone (resolution: Which is... err, like, 800 x 480, I think) and while there are fewer on-screen elements, all of the essential bits and pieces are present, as are the Moderator and Admin tools.
