Man, Capcom really outdid themselves with that trailer. Who knew Capcom would leave so many loose ends, so many plot details to speculate about… from a teaser in the year 2025? Yeah, they gave us the mysterious blonde brainwashed by Wesker for RE5 that was a hot topic for discussion way back when (even then, I swore up and down it was Jill in that cryo cell and I was right), and rightfully so, but that was just a single plot thread. Here, they gave us so many things to talk about for months on end, from the identity of the masked man to who the voices are in the Raccoon City rubble scene, who the woman is walking down the hospital hall (Natalex?), the long-haired guy in the jacket speaking, who the silhouetted monster is crawling down the ceiling (I’ve heard people say Lisa Trevor or a Regis-Licker from Outbreak since we’re now going back there and canonizing those games in the process), all the different locations the game will potentially have, who the guy walking in the rain is, who the 3 silhouetted scientists are, who will rescue Grace, how the OG characters will tie into the story, who the mutated person is at the end of the trailer… and I
love it. This honestly might be the most plot-centric Resident Evil game ever.
However, as excited as I am to learn more, I urge myself not to get too excited because we saw how well a deep, interwoven story worked for RE6. Aside from some just plain weird story twists that make no sense even in the context of Resident Evil’s quasi-science, it was just too bloated and repetitive to really invest yourself in. I’m willing to bet they’ve learned their lesson from 6 and not give us a game that’s too narrative-driven for its own good, but they’ve had some missteps even recently. I’m looking at Exoprimal, an Anthem-like dino game that, by all acccounts should’ve been a slam dunk (BRING BACK DINO CRISIS!), but was just meh.
But yeah, I don’t know how you go back to the ruins of Raccoon City and
not bring back Leon, especially since he was in leaks and a supposed early open-world multiplayer build that got turned into RE9 along with Jill. I was hoping they’d continue the BSAA story from Village especially since that looked like it could go somewhere really interesting, but it wouldn’t be the first time Capcom quietly dropped character arcs or even characters.
@Springhosen, I’m willing to bet they’ll give us a third person mode at some point. They did for Village after all.
@Teen Tyrant, considering Jill’s RE3 remake model was used in Deathly Island, I’m pretty sure the remakes
are now canon. REmake ultimately replaced RE1 in the main story, looks like they’ve officially continued that trend with the latest Remakes. How else do you explain RE3R Jill in Deathly Island and not Voth Jill?
