The two biggest names in the video gaming world...Mario and Sonic the Hedgehog...Also, the two biggest rivals in the gaming world...Which one is on the top of the list though? Who is better...The plumber who gets the girl, or the blue dude with a tude...

Hehe when I played Sonic the Hedgehog for the 1st time I never even knew Mario existed lol. Then I eventually did play a Mario game and it was a cool story bro, but it got nothin on Sonic.

The blue hedgehog owns the fat italian plumber any day :D

Mickey beats Bugs but there's no way Mario beats Sonic. *shakes head*
Micky came first
Mario came first
Micky was the first character of the medium with a personality
Mario was the first character of the medium with a personality
Both established the same things first. The simple fact is that without Mario, there very well could have never been Sonic. Also, Mario's repertoire of games is a bit better and more consistently good.

The similarities in the creation of Micky and Mario doesn't mean that Mario can ride out on Micky's success as a character. Sure, I agree that Sonic may not exist had Mario not come first, he was Sega's answer to Nintendo after all, but that doesn't make Mario better simply because he shares a similar publication history with Micky.

By the way, the quality of game lies solely in the opinion of the gamer.

You can love the Rolling Stones, but asserting that they are better than the Beatles is not the same as having an opinion.
The originator deserves credit over all those who took influence from it. To label the "improved" version as superior is to be ignorant of the history its self. So yes, I think that Mario's nearly identical role to that of Micky Mouse in the history of games entitles him to identical recognition above all others. Both are entitled to that recognition for the same reasons.

By the way, it's Shigeru Miyamoto who's consistently honored as the #1 game creator of all time by multiple publications.

Shigeru Miyamoto is a genius and deserves praise. But Sonic creator Naoto Oshima should be praised just as much for taking an idea and expanding on it. Its nothing ignorant about looking at a game and putting your own twist on it. That's not what this thread is about or what we're saying. Its who would win in a fight.

So whatever comes first is always best simply because "it came first"...? Yeah...that's convincing.
I'm trying to assert that true innovation is more worthy of commendation. I'm not saying that something heavily inspired can't be worthy of credit or praise, I'm only suggesting that how much the creator originally did be taken into heavy consideration. You can love something more if it is new. I do for most things, but if I had to choose, I would choose to put their accomplishments into perspective with the history of what they do.

Mario paved the way for platformers. Sonic took it to another level.
And that level was the Green Hill Zone!!

I gotta lot of love for mario but sonic is way more awesome

Hes way faster he wears some cool shoes and he has some catchy theme songs
Crush 40 all the way baby!!

I'm thread creator, and I really don't have a problem...You don't seem to be being rude about it...Just trying to be logical...I'm not a mod, so I really have no say, but since you said thread creator I just figured I'd let ya know that it isn't bothering me lol...So we don't have the same opinion...You like Mario...We like Sonic...that's a ok...Lol...

I do want to answer to what you said about original always being more respectable...I disagree with that...I mean...Mario did come first, but Mario really didn't even debut in his own game...He debuted in Donkey Kong...So really, that would mean, by your logic, that Donkey Kong should get the most respect...That's what came first after all...However, I'm sure MANY would agree that Mario Bros. far outclasses Donkey Kong...

And P.S...I collect Mickey Mouse stuff...He's one of my heroes...If I were to make a legitimate list of heroes, I'm not joking...Mickey would be on it...

I wanted to extend that option because you created this thread with a different topic of discussion and, I think, deserve to have that topic returned to should you so choose. I greatly respect that you are able to not only stomach, but discuss, something we disagree on.

A ha, a challenge. :)

Continuing the Disney parallel, you'll see in Steamboat Willie that there are numerous other Disney characters making their first appearance. Though, in this case, Micky Mouse takes the title of the work, he was remembered and honored above all others who could just as easily have taken his claim to fame from having the same origin.

The same can be said for Mario and Donkey Kong. In a way, you could say (though it would be much more difficult) that Donky Kong is the main character of the game, I don't think he's the more interesting subject. No, I don't think he's the main character at all. The entire appeal of the original Donky Kong game is that there was a small faceless man (therefore easier to identify with, ask any game designer) who was faced with that classical story where he has to rescue the woman he loves from the clutches of evil. That may seem like a very cliché and dismissable concept because it has been very played out...

The difference is that prior to video games, the main character of that story could only be looked at in the 3rd person. The character of a play or novel was about as close as you could hope to get. In a way, it presented a means for people to simulate the experience in a completely new fashion. That's the main reason, I think, why Mario took the gaming world by storm and deserves every ounce of recognition for doing so. It is also the reason that Donky Kong, Pete, and Minnie Mouse do not (though their contribution shouldn't be ignored).

Well, even though I created, it's not exactly MY thread lol...This is for everyone to use, whether you're a Sonic fan, Mario fan, or hate em both and choose Luigi and Tails...

Anyway, you're right...Mario did take the world by storm then...But, we actually didn't even know he was Mario...At the time he was just called "The Jumpman"...Even on the original arcade machine it called him that...Mario really didn't take the gaming world by storm as "Mario" until the Mario Bros games...Sonic didn't actually first appear in his game either...Sonic first came in in the game Rad Mobile...However, unlike Mario/Jumpman he didn't star in it...

This next part is almost completely opinion, however, that's all this really is anyway for MOST people here lol..
To me, video games are only good if they have good stories and great characters...Well...The story isn't MUCH different from Mario to Sonic...They're both usually relatively simple (Though that's not always the case with games like Sonic Adventure and Paper Mario who went a bit further than the basic GoodvsEvil/End of the level story..) but the characters are GREAT characters...Sonic has a few things Mario doesn't though...He has MUCH more friends, giving him more depth and personality because he reacts with each one in a different way...Also, because he can talk, unlike Mario who rarely does (Though I'm not saying he can't physically, it just doesn't happen much) he doesn't noticeably develop as a character as much as Sonic does...Mario is EXACTLY the same as he was back in the day...And Sonic has seemed to grow...Even though Sonic hasn't grown much, other characters like Shadow, Knuckles, Tails, and Amy have all changed MASSIVELY from how they were when first introduced...
