I wanted to extend that option because you created this thread with a different topic of discussion and, I think, deserve to have that topic returned to should you so choose. I greatly respect that you are able to not only stomach, but discuss, something we disagree on.
A ha, a challenge.
Continuing the Disney parallel, you'll see in Steamboat Willie that there are numerous other Disney characters making their first appearance. Though, in this case, Micky Mouse takes the title of the work, he was remembered and honored above all others who could just as easily have taken his claim to fame from having the same origin.
The same can be said for Mario and Donkey Kong. In a way, you could say (though it would be much more difficult) that Donky Kong is the main character of the game, I don't think he's the more interesting subject. No, I don't think he's the main character at all. The entire appeal of the original Donky Kong game is that there was a small faceless man (therefore easier to identify with, ask any game designer) who was faced with that classical story where he has to rescue the woman he loves from the clutches of evil. That may seem like a very cliché and dismissable concept because it has been very played out... The difference is that prior to video games, the main character of that story could only be looked at in the 3rd person. The character of a play or novel was about as close as you could hope to get. That's the main reason, I think, why Mario took the gaming world by storm and deserves every ounce of recognition for doing so. It is also the reason that Donky Kong, Pete, and Minnie Mouse do not.
