hey got a noob question...

To place an avatar you go to profile then about me.. then what? ( I already have the pic from photobucket)

You don't need to go to your profile but instead click on Options in the top navigation bar then on the left you'll see Edit Avatar underneath Settings and Options. Then just upload - but it needs to be within the size parameters given or it won't work.
