In short, yes. Yes it is very good. It's one of the best-selling game series of all time and despite falling into the background since the arrival of CoD 4: Modern Warfare, it has maintained a strong fanbase. Halo 4 was voted by IGN readers as superior to Black Ops II in every aspect, which is a surprising change since 2007. Don't even get me started on Machinima and Red Vs. Blue. You can read up on the sales figures and critical reception on Wikipedia

Back when the Xbox was a new console with very few games to draw an audience, Halo practically ensured the console's survival on its own by revolutionizing the console FPS genre. To this day Halo: CE is widely considered the best game on the original Xbox. Then Halo 2 set a precedent for console FPS being played online. It was the first. Ever since then, every Halo game has been good in its own way, the story (should you care to follow it) is incredibly deep, and you can teabag.
I own every single one aside from Halo Wars. I recommend that you buy not only Halo 4, but Halo: Anniversary which gives the original an awesome graphics update. That way you can experience the first game as it was intended... though, admittedly without a multiplayer.
A few awesome things you can do in Halo multiplayer:
Grifball, Infection/Flood,
Dominion, and more! Then throw in some of the awesome custom gametypes and maps people make in forge mode!
