Ohmigod I can't stand Twilight! Thankfully most people around here are over it now - and I know young girls like that weird relationship the main characters have but it's the most shallow piece of... whatever it is I've ever been exposed to. My sister wanted me to read the first book and I had to stop after page 20.

Bella saw a streetlight. 'Hey, there's a streetlight' said Bella." Ya, no thanks, i've passed writing at a grade 4 level. I'll keep my dark crazy romances limited REAL literature like Wuthering Heights, thank you very much. Aha

o.0! Thank you. No one seems to realize that this book, and I use the word book very loosely, is on a very low reading level. It's like a thirteen year old writing mature fanfiction. It's also not very well thought out at all.

Harry Potter grew with it's audience, spanning over years and the maturity grew as the audience did but all of the Twilight books came out in about a year and the content just jumped from innocent to more mature and the audience is still the same age. (And I say this as someone who isn't a Harry Potter fan.)

And the whole: "If I can't have my boyfriend, my life is meaningless thing?" Get real. And this woman actually says that she writes things she wouldn't mind her own children reading. What world do you live in?

That bugs me too! Bella is like, the anti-feminist. She has virtually no personality or anything remotely interesting about her, and like you said, her entire existance is based solely on vampire dude.

It's incredibly sad that this is what young girls are aspiring to these days. I feel like the entertainment of our generation had strong female characters that were actually half-decent role models - Zena, Charmed, even the Spice Girls to a degree etc. Now it's rolling backwards and its sad.

And don't forget, ours was the age of the stronger, independent Disney Princess: Belle, Jasmine, Ariel - girls who were smart, adventurous and headstrong. Where did the 90's go?

And why are young girls aspiring to be like that? Dependent and weak? It's sad and goes against everything women have worked for up until now.

We totally lucked out with the Disney Renaissance... all (or most, rather) Disney movies after the 90s became a bit schwang wang wang. I was totally obsessed with Ariel when i was little haha

I loved Belle. Before then all the Disney girls were waiting on guys to help them and never doing anything for themselves but Belle really showed young girls that it's okay to read, it's okay to be smart and it's most definitely okay to look after people you care for and stand up for what you think is right.

Where did the time go, Femme?

I honestly have no idea - I don't know if either girls in general are getting dafter or society is 'fed-up' with aspects of feminism. Feminism was quite alive in the 90s but now there seems to be ALOT of anti-feminist sentiment that might be influencing the creation of characters in the media. Even todays female pop-stars don't have the same message of female empowerment that they did in the 90s.

Women aren't being suppressed, they're suppressing themselves and I can't believe it's happening.

And it's that Jersey Shore show too! That **** is horrid for the reputation of women. It's like... stupidity is being ENCOURAGED because it's 'cute'. ****es me off.

I know right? Since when was being stupid and dressing sluty cute?

Wow what a talk you girls have going here. Is it OK that I jump in?
I saw some crap on TV one night and I believe it was Twilight, or maybe it was True Blood. It was some stupid vampires.

As a fan of Buffy I have certain standards that needs to be met, and this crap ain't doing it.

I know, right? Buffy was actually pretty good, vampires weren't sparkly and Buffy wasn't read to kick off without Angel and, later on, Spike. That said, it was a completely different time. The 90's was still in a feminist/teenager move of sorts and now...eh not so much. (And even though it lasted longer than just the 90's, I consider Buffy to be very much a 90's series.)
