Resident Evil: Requiem

What are people’s predictions for this 'special video' next week to commemorate the 30th anniversary? Leon reveal finally? Feels like it’s now or never.
I think that Geoff Keighley has the Leon reveal for the Game Awards. Like a 2 part promotional deal, reveal Grace and some horror oriented gameplay at Summer Game Fest then at Game Awards reveal Leon and some action oriented gameplay.

As for the video I think it's just going to be a collage of previous games:

...........

You know, at this point, I almost hope Leon IS a major playable character in the game, just so I can delete my account, move on with my life, and let other people attempt to be series gurus. XD

I do find their wording peculiar. They said no new gameplay would be shown in the special video dropping on the 29th, not new footage. It doesn’t rule out a new cinematic trailer for Requiem, which is exactly what the reveal trailer was. It didn’t show any actual gameplay, it was all cutscenes.

I find it hard to believe they won’t show anything new for the game the day the pre-orders literally drop especially with how little they’ve shown of the game in any fashion up to this point.

I’ve just stumbled upon an interview from August, I totally missed this. I’d seen video interviews of them talking about going on a journey with Grace, but this is the first i’m seeing them say the entire game is about her/based around her.

Quote in question (from producer) when asked if Grace is playable for the whole game:

We're not going through all the gameplay details or how it works yet, but the entire game is based around Grace and her journey. You're going to join Grace on her journey and see how she starts from the terrifying beginning of the storyline and what kind of journey she goes on. So, she's the basis of the entire game.

To me, that does not confirm Grace is the only playable character, but it does tell me she is the main protagonist and playable character for the majority of the game, just like Ethan for 7/8.

It goes against everything Dusk is saying about Leon.

Thoughts?

It could be that Leon helps her investigate the mystery, so it's about what she is doing. If he is playable I hope it's more than the cameo Chris got in Village.
You can see at the end of the Demo when Grace is about to escape she get's grabbed and dragged back into the corridor, that could be where another character steps in and helps her. Then from there they work together.

It’s interesting because normally this sorta language would be taken at face value. In my opinion and interpretation based on that interview, along with just the way the game’s been presented so far, then if Dusk is telling the truth there is only one conclusion: Capcom are lying.

The quote you listed from the article begins by saying "We're not going through all the gameplay details or how it works yet", so they are prefacing what they say next with we are not telling you everything. I'm sure it is Grace's story but that doesn't mean Grace is the only main character.

Dusk was clearly wrong about playing more as Leon than Grace, but he is sticking to his guns that Leon is a main playable character. If Leon is anything less than a main playable character Dusk will have really discredited himself. What I want is to be able to play as a classic character again, so I am really hoping it's true but I would be just as happy if it was another classic character.

That’s true, I take that more as a way of saying that no, we don’t control Grace for the entirety, but that’s generally a forgone conclusion with RE anyway and I believe Alyssa will be playable in some capacity, maybe a flashback explaining the circumstances of her (alleged) death.

The way they talk about going on a journey with her is the kicker imo, that only makes any real sense if you are in her shoes her throughout the majority of the game.

And I was actually going to ask why all the secrecy, but then I realised they actually haven’t been secretive at all. That’s just the effect the rumours have had on our perspective! Lol

I'm definitely looking forward to finding out more so we can know for sure, it feels like we have been stuck in this stage of Capcom's promotional plan for long enough.

So the special video was interesting. Gotta say i’m really becoming a fan of Grace, I think she’s gonna be one of the best protagonists in the franchise.
Agreed, she seems to be a great character.

I think it’s obvious Leon is going to Leon harder than he ever Leon’d in RE9. If you think Chris Chrised in Village you ain’t seen nothing

This leads me to ask: exactly what is a "main" playable character? In RE 7 and Village, outside of DLC, there are only two playable characters; Ethan for both, and Mia for 7, Chris for Village. You are only Mia and Chris for limited periods of time at one specific point in each game, near the end. The rest of the time, you are Ethan. So, this would put Ethan in what I would deem the "main" playable character position, and Mia and Chris are secondary playable characters. So, assuming a similar set-up is ahead of us for Requiem, how exactly would Leon be a "main" playable character?

I see only three ways this could reasonably work:

1) Leon becomes available as a playable character for the same amount of time, or very nearly, as Grace, making the significance of both being playable equal or near-equal.

2) Grace is the playable character up to a point, then Leon becomes the playable character for the remainder of the game and we do not return to playing as Grace, similar to the A/B scenarios for Leon and Claire in 2, or Chris taking over for the last third of Code: Veronica.

3) There is a third playable character who will make themselves known at some point in the game - such as a flashback to Alyssa where we control her, or a guest appearance by another returning character like Claire or Rose - and Leon's playable time will significantly eclipse theirs, with his own being significantly eclipsed by Grace's, making them both "main" playable characters while staying true to the general idea that Grace is the true star of this game.

Basically, if Leon is in the game at all even in just cutscenes, or is playable for a short span of time, like Chris was in Village, Dusk is somewhat correct. At this point, it is unlikely that his earlier claim that Leon is the "main" playable character is correct unless Capcom is pulling one doozy of a misdirect (lie). And his original claim, that Leon is the main character and that it is going to be - or was intended to be - an open-world experience doesn't look like it ever held any water, so already since the first trailer the guy has been wrong. It's just a matter of to what degree he will ultimately be wrong. If Leon doesn't appear in the game at all in any way, well, he will be completely wrong.

EDIT: Hours later, I realized that in 7 we were able to control Clancy a few times throughout the main game when Ethan was viewing the tapes - and Mia as well at least once - negating 7 from my point in the first paragraph, but providing somewhat of an example of option 3.

And remember that almost all Resident Evil's have some "rescue" sequence where you play as someone else trying to save someone else. Grace getting captured/stuck some point in the game is almost a certainty so the question is who will be the rescuer if/when that happens?

It's an interesting question. Dusk is still saying Leon is a "main" playable character he has just backed down on the idea that Leon is played more than Grace. I agree that if Leon is just playable for a short amount of time, like Chris in Village, Ada and Sherry in RE2/R, Carlos in RE3/R, Ashley in RE4R, and Rebecca in RE1/R, then Dusk is definitely wrong and will have discredited himself.

If Leon is playable for a similar amount of time to Chris in Code Veronica, Ada in RE4/Separate Ways, Sheva in RE5 NG+, or any of the games where you can choose from multiple players/scenarios (RE1/R, RE2/R, RE6), then Dusk will have been right about Leon being a "Main" playable character.

It could be that Grace is used during the more horror focussed segments of the game and Leon is used for the action focussed segments of the game. I can't wait to find out more ... Maybe at the Game Awards!
