Resident Evil 7 Resident Evil VII confirmed.

4x the awesome
The job of a survival horror game isn't to scare the fictional character in the game. It's to scare the player. Batman is way more hardcore than any character in Resident Evil yet his game had one of the biggest scares in video games. It's not that hard to take a strong character and put them in a scary situation for the player. They did it in Lost in Nightmares so that excuse doesn't really work.

Also, it's quite obvious why we can say RE7 is different. Just like it's obvious why RE4 is different. One lacks the horror and design established by the originals and the other lacks the core gameplay and characters established by the series. Just because each game did or is doing things right doesn't dismiss what they did wrong. I still love RE4 because I love the series' gameplay and story almost as much as I love survival horror but I'll still always fault it for its shortcomings as a Resident Evil game and RE7 is no different. It may be scary again and aiming for a similar design as the originals, but it just doesn't look or play like a Resident Evil game and even if I do end up enjoying the game for what it is (like I have been since RE4), I'll still fault it for what it's doing wrong.
But that's what I mean when I'm talking about the direction of this game. The situation they're creating is clearly built off of the character's fear and lack of knowledge surrounding these events. That doesn't necessarily have to be a driving factor in scaring the player. The inexperienced character looks to be a vital part of the story they're telling with this game. The character's fear and inexperience are driving the story here. It's not about whether one character will inspire more fear in the player than another. It's about how that character's background would affect how the story plays out. All I'm saying is that taking the game at face value for what it appears to be at this point, it would make more sense to have a character like Ethan than Chris or Leon.

Not necessarily. The only thing that really changes is how they'll react to the dangers lurking inside the mansion. For example, while a "newbie" like Ethan will be immediately overwhelmed and have getting the hell out of there as his top priority, a seasoned vet like Chris, Leon, Jill, etc. will be more confrontational with the available resources while still ultimately being on the lookout. In the end, their motivations are pretty much the same: survival.

Plus, who's to say that someone like Natalex isn't capable of bringing unique threats (or even becoming one herself) that the seasoned veterans haven't seen before? Her whole backstory is predicated on not only replicating, but surpassing her brother's unreachable heights (she's literally trying to become immortal FFS and has a contingency plan in place like no other RE villain could possibly dream to think up), and given what we already know about her methods and demeanor in Revelations 2, she's certainly capable of pushing the vets to their limits in ways no one else before her ever has. Hence, it could, more or less play out the same way with the older characters if done correctly, it's called writing. Yes, the older characters are otherworldly, but they're also dealing with otherworldly threats that are only growing impossibly stronger with each numbered installment (or, more accurately, with each new deus ex machinistic virus).

Hell, if anything, I'd say Natalex (or any Wesker) would be too OP for a new, "ordinary," "rookie"-type character. Again with characters meeting the circumstances.

Except, as somebody else pointed out earlier, the RE5 leaked audio proves that Chris is, at most bisexual if not completely straight. Of course, that's not to say he doesn't also desire a little "meat" on the side, it's certainly possible (hey, more power to him), but we have mere subtle anecdotes (from male and female RE fans alike) as opposed to leaked audio from the game flat out confirming he's interested in women.

On a side note, Jill did sound a little... "jelly" LMAO.

She did sound like a lil' jelly filled Jill sandwich. lol

I could see him as a bisexual but at the same time I don't see it with Piers. What Chris and Piers had was simply brotherly love- if anything. Of course that is just my opinion.

Yeah I totally get where you're coming from here, and I agree with the majority of things you said. Honestly for the most part I'm just trying to justify for myself why they felt the need to forgo the use of old characters. I love the old characters and we've invested so much into them that of course we'd want to see their stories continue to develop. But I do feel that while the endgame may be similar for a Chris and an Ethan type, I can't help but feel that the route taken there would be quite different. Which, considering the majority of the game will take place in the "route being taken to escape" phase, it arguably could changed the game quite a bit. But in all honesty I'm probably trying to justify it to myself more than others.

Ever since the Nivanfield epidemic I've totally been able to see Chris as a bisexual (or pan, we don't know), but yeah he and Piers were just bros.

I totally see where you're coming from and I agree for the most part, but even an experienced vet like Chris or Leon could experience dread under the "right" circumstances. Again, it all comes back to writing. Natalex's whole methodology is based on striking fear into her victims and pushing them to their limits as seen in Revelations 2. With her in the limelight, Capcom could get creative and treat us to whole new, over-the-top scenarios that we've never seen before and really test the experienced characters in ways no villain before her ever could, not even Albert (which she's already shown she's capable of doing with Natalia), perhaps even tip RE off into more of a Psychological Survival Horror route. That would be a change I think the RE fandom could get behind.

To that end, I'd say Jill would be the perfect target for someone like Natalex given her traumatized state and her involvement in both her brother's death and research (Uroboros). It's very likely she's suffering flashbacks of Wesker, she could very easily use that against her in unique and compelling ways (i.e: hallucinogens and a new virus using her own DNA as a blueprint courtesy of her brother, could be interesting). It would allow Jill to get true closure after her ordeal with Albert and allow us to play as both a "scared and vulnerable" character and as someone we know and love at the same time. It would also be a rare opportunity for character development that wouldn't be possible with any other original character (she was literally turned into a bio weapon against her fellow BSAA colleagues FFS) and giving us a whole new Survival Horror experience to boot.

That's also why I say Natalex might be a bit TOO over-the-top for a "rookie" like Ethan given what we already know about her methods and demeanor. The rookie STARS members got the primitive T-Virus mutations in their first mission, no reason to leave the rookie Ethan biting off WAY more than he can chew in his first operation from a storyline perspective.

Yeah I don't get why they haven't brought Jill back yet. Maybe they've realized they're horrible at character development and don't want to screw her up. And you're right, she would be a good target for a psychological type of horror.

Who knows Ethan may have some connection to past characters that we don't know of yet, but im more convinced he's a total newbie.

I've heard some rumors and speculation about this. That one of the characters from RE7 will have some ties to a past character or organization. We don't know who though, it could be the Baker's, it could be Mia, it could be someone who hasn't been announced yet. I think it'll be something darker like Umbrella or one of it's founders over Leon's cousin or something.

That would be awesome. I really can't wait to see the story of this game, Ethan, the Bakers, Mia, i can't wait to meet em all lol. The first thing i thought when i saw how the Bakers acted in the new trailer was that these guys remind me of a family of Ganados lol. Even though this game at first glance looks a world away from the previous games in terms of story, iv heard many times there's gunna be some deep connection, and with the Umbrella helicopter in that photo, i think it's going back further than any of us may realize.

The Bakers don't actually remind me of Ganado's. I thought about that and to me the seem more like "Crazies". I get the feeling that the Virus is something that messes with the brain and makes themcrazy. This game could be taking homages from those kinds of horror films over Zombie flicks. It's even possible that the majority of the game until the Resident Evil style twist will have us trapped in the Baker's household as their pet. We're basically kidnapped and we're trying to escape their home and they chase us around the neighborhood. Perhaps we'll find other neighbors infected as well if they haven't been killed off by the first set of crazies.

Honestly real people kidnapping you and doing **** like this to you is a hell of a lot scarier than some silly Zombie chasing you around. Plus it's not really something that's been explored in gaming. This is rather original in that aspect and could be a major hit! I think this game is going to do very well. It's also really the only reason to own VR. Experience what it's like to be a slave to the Bakers. Eat up son!

They're not abandoning Windows 7 which is nice.

Lurking is my jam.
I'm just waiting for someone to take the "Weclome to the family, son." as a mod so I can use it in PC games.

But Re7 is still a bit iffy on me. I was never of FPV for anything aside Metroid so I'm not sure how to feel about this. But hey. If it works it works I guess.

I just have a feeling Ethan is going to be a very likeable character. If he's coming to this place looking for his wife like we're being led to beleive, i think there might be some emotion there, some anger, lot's of character development as we see him survive what ever's coming, and i dunno i just think he's going to be great. If Capcom are really pushing forward with scaling down old characters, i really think they'll put a lot of effort into his character.

Or they'll pull the classic Capcom move of "let's throw this character into a situation that totally warrants character development and then have them exit as stoicly as they entered", but I really hope you're right. If they're going to forgo our beloved characters in favor of new ones, the least they could do is give us reason to agree with their decision.

That'll more than likely be my departure from this series- if they decide to completely drop the past characters. At least properly sum up their stories before completely wringing them off.

I definitely think they'll at least be referenced in this game. And for the series in general, I'm confident that they'll appear in other games, likely main ones and definitely side titles, and possibly movies in the future. I think part of the reason that they've entirely overhauled the cast is because they're trying intentionally to make drastic changes. Part of the goal I think is to grab people's attention. To say "hey, we heard your complaints and we're not afraid to go where we have to go to win you back over". I think even if this game turns out to be a huge success, they'll still go back to more familiarity in terms of characters and story, though gameplay might remain similar. Maybe it's a cop out move to say that if it is a flop we can forget about these characters and their stories, but I think the largest driving force behind the decision is that they want to bring something new, something fresh, something totally out of left field, something that lets us know they'll do what it takes, and once they've made that opinion heard, they'll reel it back in and tie it further into RE as we know it (again mostly in terms of plot and characters, if the game's successful I don't think they would change gameplay that much). Just my two cents. But I honestly think they're gonna deliver a really solid experience with this game.

HOLY ****, please tell me that doesn't look like Ozwell E. Spencer.

Either Capcom MUST be onto something here or they're gonna get that GIF pulled in due time. I highly doubt they'd just let a huge plot point concerning one of their biggest characters be left out in the open for all to see months before the game even comes out.
