Wesker and Birkin

In a few of the Resident Evils there William Birkin and Albert Wesker have either worked together or mentioned each other one way or the other, so since both were both involved with the viruses, did Wesker have a friend in Birkin and vice versa or was he just using him?

Wesker has no friends, just pawns.

I'm sure they were friends when they first met, but as time went on, Wesker began forming his own plans for Umbrella and the world, so he decided to use Birkin and his research to further his own plans.

More like frienamies. I think they were allies. But William didn't survive long enough to betray Wesker and vice versa. But from what i've seen and from what I have read in the files, William and Wesker were competitive allies. That's why a lot of fans make such a big deal out of the pair. Birkin seemed like the only person Wesker truly admired and respected other than himself.
