Yes, I do think that you are worrying for no reason. I've always claimed and believed that RE7 would reinvent the series in a way are RE4 did, it turned out that I was right. I think that the game will be very good, even if it is different. The numbered titles have always been... experimental? Capcom has never been afraid to try new things with the series and I 100% agree with
@meg5493. The game will attrack tons of new fans and it's already gather a crazy and dedicated fan base. There is no doubt in my mind that RE7 will do well. As
@ResidentDevil said. It could very much dethrone RE5 if the marketing is kept up. To make this even easier to achieve. By the looks of things. Resident EVII will be the first title in the series to launch on all of the major console makers systems and PC. Capcom's trademark filing highly suggests that it will launching on the upcoming Nintendo NX. Which I have no doubt in my mind that it will.
As for the VR gimmick fears. My fear was put to rest on Wednesday when I got to play the HTC Vive. It was amazing and I cannot think of a single game that has been released or coming out that will be a better experience for VR than Resident EVII. This game is the highlight and showcase for it. It'll work. Prior to playing the Vive. I was very worried about it. As someone who developed a game for the Oculus Rift. I had reasons to be worried because the Rift is not a very good platform imho. It lacked the immersion that the HTC Vive provides. I did not feel like I was in the game, I felt like I had a piece of **** on my head that created the illusion of a big screen TV. Yes, there is a significant difference and that $200-300 price difference is 100% worth it. Resolution and frame rate makes that much of a difference. So does the motion sensitivity. I also highly suggests that Sony (the only platform that it supports VR for) actually creates a proper controller for the VR. The HTC Vive's controller is absolutely immersive. It might look like ****, but it has haptic feedback and it's vibration is far superior to even the XBO's controller. It actually feels like the objects should feel in a reaction. Using a bow, I felt the effects of the strings as if I was using a real bow. I was impressed.
We have multiple ways to play the game.
1) Standard TV
2) PSVR
3) Parallax 3D displacement (Rumored)
As far as Parallax goes. It could be nothing but a patent by Nintendo suggests that Parallax will be the new consoles gimmick. It's something that we know they've been working on forever and they continue to renew the patents. 3D gaming is not something new to Nintendo and the Game Cube was even originally going to have a 3D add-on that was ridiculous in terms of price that they decided not to launch it. More than the console itself.
Anyways. Parallax gaming is a way to fake 3D visuals on a 2D display without the need of 3D glasses. It will likely have a Kinect like camera that would track the players head and movement to have the effects directed toward them. Resident EVII would be able to provide and amplified horror experience with Parallax 3D on a standard TV.
@mjk321 would be getting a little more than he bargained for when that zombie comes around the corner. I'd imagine that the camera would be simple to place somewhere and will not be picky like the Wii sensor bar was. Interesting enough, according to the patent it is able to detect the players face and relay that information to the AI and it will be able to recognize the player's location IRL if he or she is in the enemies field of view (FOV). Which will allow for some great use of mini-games. Something I hope AAA titles like REVII doesn't use. I would imagine the new Zelda game will do cool things like Link's sword back handling out of the screen as he swings his sword. Of course this is all speculation assuming that the NX is using this technology in the first place. I'm just curious on how lighting will effect it since it does use infra-red. Unless they found away to work around it.
Here's two examples of Parallax 3D.
