What causes are important to you? :)

Ms. La Femme inspired me to make this thread. :)

What causes are important to you? (Be it animal rights, save the rain forest, FEMINISM. ;)) Who/what do you support? Do you do volunteer work? Would you like to? Why not post a link to the organizations you support?

Me, I support To Write Love on Her Arms. They're a great group that tries to spread love and hope and find help for people with depression, addiction, etc. Here's a link to their website's about page: http://www.twloha.com/vision/

Keeping music in schools...Across the country budget cuts are forcing music classes to be taken out of schools, and that just isn't right...Music is more than sounds we hear...Music affects our soul, our minds, our emotions, and our actions...Music is far more important than just the spoken word...And for that to be taken away from the youth is a crime...I honestly feel that those who got rid of it should be punished, for music is one of the most powerful tools the world has ever known, and ever WILL know...
Hot Topic and VH1's Save the Music Foundations are a good place to start, but you will find save the music type functions all over the place...Music is life people...And the youth of America, and WORLD do not need their lives taken...

I very much so love being a part of the make a wish foundation. Every Christmas from now on I'll be visiting children in the hospital to play them some songs, try to cheer them up, etc. I donate to make a wish every year as well as a few other charities. I used to be a part of "To write love on her arms" but I'm not anymore. It is a great foundation though.

I prefer being there for the people too and donating. I'd like to see who I'm donating to and give them a helping hand/listening ear if needed. I just love helping people in general... and animals! :)

I am really really really trying to make this sound as nice as I can possibly make it, but what is it with you and feminism? Gender equality should focus on the problems of both genders, not one.

Meg, you are the biggest sweetheart! I think it takes only a few more people just like you to save the world. *kiss*

Me? I'm of no use. Causes that are important to me are the right to carry arms, the right to use snowmobile and abolish tax on property and wealth. It becomes clear that I'm a terrible person when I compare this to the other posts here. :(

Haha, we should maybe start a "MASCULINISM" movement? :D

Well besides feminism lol, the American Cancer Society. I have lost so many loved ones due to cancer that I feel it would be wrong of me NOT to support them. I don't ever participate in relays but I always try my best to make it to the Relay for Life every year.

It's an empowerment thing..

Good call on the gender equality part....

Although you'll have to wait a while before that ever happens, for Feminism and masculinism are two cheeks of the same arse as far as i'm concerned.

Or As Detective Mills from the movie Se7en would say,

'' You're no messiah. You're a movie of the week. You're a f***ing t-shirt, at best''

All i take interest these days is the Rain forest of the world.

I've even put money forward to the campaign, of planting 1million trees in Scotland, in an attempt to let mother nature reclaim some land back. I tend not to go too heavy on people, not unless there really isn't a voice.

Rain forest are what i spend time preserving.

Good, because if Brazil looses that they really have nothing...And Brazil RULES!

Didn't I make an entire thread, and say several (million) times that feminism is about equality between all the sexes? It's about gaining equality for men, women, and people who are both/neither. Try actually reading and remembering my posts more often and you'll start to get what it is with me and feminism. :p Although, I stated it in this thread as a joke.

And I got a kiss from Mr. Romero!

Totally. I wish "Do we need government?" was more active.

Better than the people who want to remove your ability to defend yourself/drive what you want/steal your hard earned money for "society's benefit."

Right now I'm a "passionate" (<-- Social Study teacher's choice of words) free-market/anti-war advocate. I expect to convert to Marxism next year for the lulz.

Actually, I fancy myself as brutally honest. And I'm not going to entertain you anymore since you seem content with being ignorant and I have more important things to do than get into fights with a hopeless cause of a person over the Internet. Fare well. (Okay, so really I'm just terrified of Ms. Femme.) Either way! *fades into the shadows all ninja-like*

All right, seriously. This thread is supposed to be happy. I'll agree to take my blunt comments elsewhere is you agree to do the same with your eye-rolling. Cool?

Now I really don't want to talk about this anymore in this thread with anyone. I'd hate for this thread to get locked so fast.

There is no reason for this thread to be blocked...Although out of nothing but sheer interest, what is it exactly that caused you to call me a hopeless cause of a human ? What exactly is it that you know about me as a person... I promise after your reply i'll let it go... i'm just curious to know what your sum total of knowledge of me is as a person that would warrant such a label.

Topics that get mega-derailed tend to get locked. ;)

And I meant it when I said I wasn't talking about this in this thread anymore. Send me a PM if it bothers you so much. BUT!

OT: The Red Cross is also an incredible organization. It's awesome to know that there are people who are willing to go to disaster sites to help people. :)

Check your egos at the doors please. I'm kind of tired of seeing them in every. single. thread.

ANYWAY.

I'm involved with a number of organizations in my community. The Well is a LGBT community that provides support and housing for gays/lesbians or whoever else who has had a difficult time coming out to their family and/or have been kicked out of their homes after coming out. I can't really counsel people because I've never been in the same boat, but I mainly do administrative work for them, as well as occasionally organize events.

I've also been in a non-paid position at the United Food and Commercial Workers Union - I've been writing a report on this legal background of unionism for migrant farm workers for the UFCW to take to Dalton McGuinty in hopes of getting the Agricultural Employees Protection Act changed.

And then I also have done some work for the Ontario SPCA - I've saved raccoons a couple years ago, a couple cats that people have hit on the road and don't bother stopping for, blah blah blah.

I support our local Food Bank centre which supplies and distributes emergency boxes of food to people in need due to various factors such as job loss, separation, sickness, debt etc. At the moment all I can do is buy food to donate but it's something. If I didn't have the kids to care for, I'd be a proper volunteer and get stuck in because I used to survive on food parcels and I know how they can mean the difference between a meal that week or not.

I am a supporter of Catie's Kits (although there's not much I can do other than solidarity-style support because it's US based and has no donation set-up as of yet) - one of our members on another forum had a little sister who died of cancer and so the organisation was set up in her name and provides bags of fun stuff for kids to do when stuck in hospital having chemo or whatever. I've never been through that sort of thing but I have a lot of respect for the member in question and we get along so I figured why not?

I'm a qualified crisis-pregnancy counsellor (although I've not done it for some years now) and that's basically talking women (and their partners) through their options when faced with an unplanned pregnancy. It's for a pro-choice organisation which, whilst strongly Christian, does not impose personal belief when counselling people. We'll talk about it if the other person wants but no counsellor is permitted to come out with stuff that either pushes in one direction or makes the person feel bad about themselves or their decision. Counselling is actually quite difficult...I didn't think it would be that hard but when you're sitting across from someone, listening to them verbally make a crappy decision that you know will affect them badly, it's hard not to try and get them to see your point of view. You have to just listen, offer objective advice and then let them make the choice.

I'm a supporter of CLAPA which is the cleft lip and palate association - my niece was born with a cleft palate and no one knew it was there because you can't check for it on scans prior to birth.

I work for a charity aimed at blind, visually impaired and print disabled people. Charity work is actually pretty dog-eat-dog when you come up against other organisations doing similar things to you. You'd have thought you could all pool resources and work together but no - everyone for themselves, especially where funding is concerned.

Having lost two children of my own and my daughter losing her father when she was younger, we both have links with the Child Bereavement Trust and the Snowdrop Walk. My mother now works for the CBT too and when I lost the twins, the Trust were very helpful and a useful resource to have.

I also support various charities via donation boxes or whatever when I'm out and about in town - things like First Responders, Air Ambulance, kids with special needs etc. Used to buy the Big Issue every week too but the vendor doesn't sell in our town any more.

tl;dr- I support some stuff.

I'm a huge supporter of Help for Heroes. It's a charity that aim to provide wounded service men with the treatment that they deserve such as the medical treatment, recognition and to provide them with opportunities to do things that they probably ruled out when they were wounded (for instance a group of amputees tried to qualify for the Dakar rally, narrowly missing out). I don't care for the politics of why we are at war, I care for the soldiers coming home safe and sound.

I'm also very passionate about Cancer Research. My best mate lost his mum to lung cancer several years ago and the effect it has had on him is just not right. Plus, dealing with cancer is what we should be focussing on, not treating obesity in my opinion, but that's another topic for another day.
