The Series' Tone

I've been looking retrospectively at what it was about these games, in particular the lore and atmosphere, that I found so gripping. And the closer I looked, the more I realized no two Resident Evils really even have so much as the same tone.

The original game was like a cheesy Sci-Fi Channel original movie.
The second game was like a televised drama (makes sense, given the background of its writers.)
The third game was like a big-budget Hollywood urban apocalypse movie.
CODE: Veronica was like an anime.
The remake was an attempt to lend the original game some dignity, seriousing up the tone, cutting back on the camp factor, and introducing a gothic, almost Burtonian look to Spencer Mansion and the surrounding gardens.
Zero was like a mixture of the above two.

It goes on and on. With this in mind, which tone do you guys think RE wore best? Which would you like to see more of? How come?
