The Classic RE games

0 through 4. I find that the classic RE games are far more entertaining than the more recent ones. Does anyone agree? I like being here but I can't seem to come up with any good topics. Not sure if this one has been posted already. Sorry if it's a repeat post.

Welcome!

I do think that there's a certain charm to the classic games that the series seems to have lost over the years. Despite their best efforts and success in finding some of that in RE2R, it doesn't seem to be something that they can keep for any substantial length of time.

Trying to set aside nostalgia, I think it’s just that there’s a clearer sense of games just being games back then, and I include 5 and 6 in this.

Welcome.

You and I think alike. I think it all went downhill when Shinji Milkami left the company. He was not perfect by any stretch but he at least kept the franchise reasonably coherent.

The first big loss was when Kenichi Iwao left the company in 1996 (There's an interview with him in my sig).

The second big loss was when Noboru Sugimura died in 2005 (He was one responsible for keeping the storyline intact once Iwao left)

The third and final strike was when Mikami left in 2006 after disagreements with Capcom over RE4's ports.

After that, frankly, the series sucked (imo) with only two diamond in the roughs since then (Revelations 2 and RE2R).

As of now, I have zero hope for the series unless they outsource the series to mid-level developers because that would give them an adequate budget for polish and also great creative freedom to really hone survival horror gameplay without the strings of trying to please a very wide audience as an AAA series.

That's just my 2 cents, a lot of people are casuals and will disagree with me but I can't help the fact that I have been with survival horror since 1997 (Alone in the Dark and Resident Evil were my favorite games even then) and have certain expectations.

Very surprised and pleased to hear Revelations 2 passed the purity test. I thought it was underrated because I rarely come across fans that talk about it.

You’re so critical of the action titles I figured you’d dump any RE game that’s slightly linear in the garbage bin.

I was the same way untill I saw RE7. RE7 was the reason why I came back here.. it looks interesting. Still havn't played it yet.

I own all the games and the only ones I actually hate are RE0 and Umbrella Corps.

There are other entries I’m not really to big on but I didn’t mind a one time play through at all. RE0 and Umbrella Corps are just so dreadful to me. I know there are other entries that get a load of hate but these are the only two that I just did not have a good time with from start to finish.

Just talking about the main entries here:

RE 1-3 OG versions were the best in terms of having that Resident Evil look and feel to them. I think everyone who is a fan of the series will always hold those ones close to the heart.

RE4 I had a hard time getting through the first bit cuz it was so drab looking. I didn’t mind the new over the shoulder. Once I got further in the game it got much better.

RE 5 and 6 get hate (particularly 6) but I honestly didn’t mind either of them. RE4 already took away the old school RE feel so by the time 5 and 6 came along, I was already kinda used to the series losing the OG feel. I like action but in this series it took away a lot of the survival horror.

RE 7 I wasn’t very fond of cuz I’m not a first person lover unless it’s Call of Duty. I know people liked that it made the game scarier but I like my RE games in third person. Just a personal preference. Ethan is not at all interesting to me and I didn’t care for his story. It brought back horror so I’ll give it that but yeah….didn’t really dig it and the Baker family….no thanks, they sucked.

RE8, as much as I LOVE Chris and seeing him in this game….wtf was this lmao….this game is the furthest in the entire main series…no, I’d say the entire series in general….that leapt the furthest away from Resident Evil….i get it, zombies, mutated dogs, hunters, lickers, these aren’t realistic either but werewolves and vampires? Come on….if you put yourself in the RE story, the other usual enemy suspects fit in the RE world. Werewolves and vampires do not. I peeled my mind away from it being an RE title and did enjoy my one time playthrough but in terms of it being in the Resident Evil line of games…silly.

RE9 is magnificent. It was nice to return to more of the true survival horror feel while still adding action but not to an overwhelming degree. I got right in my feels returning to Raccoon City 28 years after RE3 and seeing some of the old stomping grounds. I love how they paid attention to details (won’t spoil any). It truly made me feel legit sad….this franchise has been with us for 30 years this month and they gave us the gift of returning to a familiar place. I think everyone here will understand the attachment you feel to the story after all this time. The characters feel like they’re our friends lol and we are thinking about what happened, what they went through as we walk around a now destroyed Raccoon City. RE9 was great nostalgia.

Anyway, we all have our own tastes in the games but I think most will all agree on the first 3 particularly being the best ones.
