PS2 memory cards

I have been using 16 MB memory cards for my PS2. I just bought one original Sony memory card (8 MB).

I expected to only have half the number of save slots in my games with the new 8 MB card, but to my surprise the number of save slots are the same for 16 and 8 MB cards.

This means that my 16 MB cards are showing as full when only half of their capacity are in use. How can I make use of the extra capacity in these cards? If no one can help me with this, I'll stop buying large capacity memory cards.

Here is a webshop in Sweden offering 64 MB cards for PS2.

Let's take RE4 as example, in RE4 I have so many save slots:
20 slots when I use Sony's 8 MB card.
20 slots when I use a 16 MB card.
Also 20 if I use a 64 MB card??

I don't understand why they make large capacity cards when I can not use the extra space. The large capacity cards are not more expensive.

Can someone please shed some light on this?

Thanks. Do you talk from experience?
If more capacity gave more saving slots, why should I not see a difference? Is this making sense?

On the 16mb card when it tops 8mb then you shall notice a difference. And yes i know that from exp, ive used 8 and 16 mb cards for my playstation, and until you see them full its really not noticeable. Don't worry about it for now, just continue to save your games

I have tested with RE4 and GTA San Andreas.

With RE4 I have not tried to save in all 20 slots yet.

With San Andreas I have saved in all the 8 slots on the 16 MB card and no more slots becomes visible. Maybe there's still more space in the card, but that does not help me if I don't get more than 8 save slots.
GTA SA has 8 save slots also when I use the 8 MB card.

View it through the memory card manager without a disk in, and if the size is correct i wouldn't worry about it

The number of slots is something from the game, not from the Memory Card. I'm sure about that
Yes, so why are large capacity cards better? The games just assumes that the card is 8 MB anyway.

The capacity is correct. I just checked one of the 16 MB cards, it has 14648 KB free space (it contains some RE saves). So the card is definately a 16 MB card.

How can I utilize its full capacity?

I have a 16MB card and it's messing up!! It's apparently notorious for messing up. Just buy multiple Sony cards!!

In what way is it messing up? What happens?

My 16 MB cards is "Max Memory", manufactured by Datel Desing & Development Ltd.

These Max Memory cards comes bundled with a mini disc containing 10 classic retro games. My only problem so far is that I can't make use of more than half of the card capacity.

That's the same card as me!!

Look at the testimonies for it: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Datel-Max-M...=dp_db_cm_cr_acr_txt?ie=UTF8&showViewpoints=1

Some items haven't shown up on my card, and apparently it can delete EVERYTHING on your card.

Some cards never have any problems, but a fair amount do. Be warned!

Trust only Sony official ones!

Your problematic cards, did they mess up early or after you had used them for some time? The only that worries me is if they work fine for some time and starts to fail late in a game.

Did you ever manage to utilize more than 8 MB?

If its not sony official then i would steer clear of it.
To my knowledge, only the 8 MB cards are official. I might buy the official cards next time, but I already got many 16 MB cards. If there is a way to utilize 16 MB then I want to know.

I don't think there would be a legit way to be able to use the full 16, especially if its not official then your just going t have to get used to, two 8's

I agree with him. I've used mine only about 3 times and it's already starting to lose data.

Trust me, using the 16MB will only lead to tears!! Your best solution is the OFFICIAL Sony 8MB cards.

I don't personally see the need for more than two 8mb cards. Ive had alot of games, HELL OF ALOT, and i don't need more than 2. Delete old data especially if you don't have the game anymore.

I quite agree!! :)

romero how many ps2 games do you own? Even if you have dozens and dozens you probably don't play them all.

There is no legal issue. If it was, these cards would not be in sale.
If you buy an IBM pc, you are free to replace the IBM hard disk with a larger Samsung disk. And you would be free to utilize whatever capacity the Samsung disk had.

It's good that the error occured so early, and not much later.
Actually the use of "official" and "unofficial" is somewhat unnecessary. The Sony cards are official Sony cards. The Datel cards are official Datel cards. :P Both are legit. One is trustworthy, the other less trustworthy.

I could do with only two cards, but I prefer to have two cards for each game I own. If I could utilize 16 MB on the 16 MB cards, I could do with only one card for each game.
I always keep some save files from each game play through. It happens that I want to take a look at old saved games.

I have about 14 games and I plan to buy more. If no cards can store more than the Sony 8 MB cards, I'll need 28 cards already, and more for future games.

I'm going to order at least 20 Sony 8 MB cards, or 10 Max Memory 16 MB cards if I find a way to utilize the capacity.

I just have to find where they are cheapest. What is fair price for the Sony card?

An electro supermarket nearby charge $47 for Sony 8 MB, and $52 for Max Memory 16 MB.
I looked at some Norwegian webshops which are some cheaper than the supermarket, but most of them doesn't have Sony cards at the moment, or they got 1-5 cards in stock. Darn it.

You are going to say that I'm crazy, well, I'm seriously a die hard gamer lol.
