If you could create your own game...

Meg

So bin ich eben
What would it be? Who'd you want to work on it with? Anything goes except it has to be 100% your own creation. No making sequels/prequels/reboots for existing franchises.

For me, I want a cute little snowman game. I think it should be a platformer. You make your own snowman, play through levels, make your own, and there might as well be some snowboarding and snowball fight levels. I just love snowman and I think this could be really cute.

I would want to work on this game with the makers of LittleBigPlanet. Annnnd I'd love it if Mr. Romero helped too. <3

Well that's mine. What about you?

That sounds fun Meg, I won't lie. Being that casual gamer I am, I could seriously get down on that...

If it were me, I would love to do a side-scrolling fighter game, but unlike your traditional fighters, in this one would focus on attack EVASION, like in the Jackie Chan movies! Starts at 50 seconds.

I would love a true open world game, like what the developers of No Man's Sky are doing. I want to actually live as a character, I want to recreate the monotonous regime of going to work, encountering unique situations, exploring the labyrinthine cities of a country. It sounds a bit boring, but we have always dreamed of becoming an astronaut or a highly regarded celebrity and how that would play out.

The appeal of a game like that for me is that it truly means an open world role playing game. It's like the Sims, but with far superior graphics and no 'rabbit hole' mechanics to fill in the blanks of some activities.

This kind of game would be near impossible to make and would take decades to refine even the number of variables in play, but it's the sort of full escapism that we all long for!

It sounds a bit boring, ...

Not at all! An improved version of The Sims? I would definitely play it!

I have dreamed about making my own game so often and created so many possible scenarios in my head that I can't really decide. The most obvious option in my case would probably be to turn my novels into videogames, but even though most of them fit into the horror adventure genre, it would be rather difficult to find "playable" sections between all that story.

However, there are two characters on my mind, two witches, who have never been able to fit in any of my novels, so I would probably make a game about them. A fantasy adventure where you have to solve puzzles (real puzzles, not just finding objects and placing them where they belong) while exploring mysterious environments and using magic powers to defend yourself against ghosts, vampires, zombies, other witches and similar enemies. Both playable characters differ a lot from each other, like one of them is the better witch, but the other has better human abilities like speed and strength, creating a totally different game experience depending on who you play as. If both witches are on the road together or only one, and in the latter case, if you can decide who to play as, would have to depend on the story, but I would include a multiplayer function for the chapters that feature them both. It wouldn't be a very violent game, but still dark and scary and therefore perhaps not suitable for children.

I don't know if I could just stick to one idea/game. I've been having so many thoughts rushing through my head about improving existing games and even creating new ones, but I always see myself coming back to horror. The way I envision these games in my head, I know they'll work, but not for business. That's what's wrong with this industry today. Great ideas won't work unless they appeal to the common simpleton. With that said, if we lived in a perfect world where I can be in charge of the creation of a video game and have the budget to make it as great as it is conceptually, then I would craft multiple survival horror experiences all with varying themes and play styles.

Inspiration for my ideas mostly come from my own fascination and psyche, but also some of my favorite entertainment. So for my first idea (which I'm coming up with for the first time as I type), I was thinking of doing a mystery encounter with aliens that doesn't rely on senseless action. For this particular game, I want to focus on story and mystery. It'll take place in a small town, farm and fields, government facility, and inevitably take you on a space ship... or new world. I want these aliens to be ferocious, fast, vengeful, stalking, and controlling, in turn, making the main character very vulnerable.

The idea may sound generic, but I really want this to be a study of humanity that deals with themes like ingenuity vs biological superiority, human cruelty, precaution of the unknown, etc. Which will be reflective in the gameplay by not arming you with everything and leaving the most convenient items lying around, like ammo cases and an array of guns. I want the player to use their ingenuity to take out their targets. I want practical things that you would find in these environments. The enemies are also more than just a plot device, there's a history, reason, and motivation to all this which will remain a mystery for most of the game along with other plot points that eventually intertwine.

I think my ideal developer for this game is Remedy. Alan Wake has inspired a lot of my thoughts for some time now, including this one, which really makes them the obvious choice. They've done such an amazing job with atmosphere, writing, and story telling before, so it's a no-brainer here.

I've also had a more ambitious idea for an open world horror game for a while that I don't really feel like diving into right now. There's been so much going on with that idea ever since I first came up with it a few years ago. It's just constantly evolving.

An allegorical video game? You can have all my money.

A WD style game wear every choice you make changes the world around you or in my case community.

If you choose to fend for yourself the community sees you as a threat.

IF you help then the community would assist you.

How so? What brought you to that conclusion?
While your game on the face of it is a mere survival game with aliens, as you describe, the themes of "ingenuity vs biological superiority, human cruelty, precaution of the unknown" are also reflected in the content of the game. Frankenstein can be perceived as a horror story, but it's a very deep Marxist message in which the working class (the monster) rise up against their creators (the wealthy characters) having neglected their duties of care towards them as their "source".

I may be reading too much into your design, but to a literary fanatic such as myself this is an allegorical game/idea of the best quality; you show a simple concept in the mere aesthetics but you reflect a deeper meaning and/or set of themes in the underlying meaning of the project.

At first I thought you were being sarcastic, but you do make a great point. Not that I'm using a symbolic message like that. I'm aiming more towards if such a thing were to ever occur, who'd be in the right? Which is why I say that I want there to be a history and reason. There's a lot of details I'm leaving out, but the general idea is that we as humans are curious and sometimes our curiosity can be cruel. But at the same time, we have to be ready for anything and are really just scared. It's more of a behavioral study than anything. But your analogy is great though. Awesome connection.

As far as "making all the money." I highly doubt an idea like that would appeal to the masses. People these days just want mindless killing and hand holding.

If I could I would create not a game, but a new concept of gaming(not exactly new, I think it already exists in a manga or anime somewhere). For games for example like survival horror, nothing comes close to actually experiencing the horror ourselves, so if I could develop some kind of device so we could for example place on our head, and virtually experience the videogame. It wouldn't feel any different from reality, except for the fact that it isn't real of course. Imagine Resident Evil for example if you are not playing in a controller staring at the TV, but YOU are living the story of the game, fighting for survival, running from zombies. There is such a thing on the movie Demolition Man, where they don't have sex, but using a device they put on their head, they virtually experience it(that's kinda where I got the idea).

This would obviously be almost impossible to acomplish but it would be a dream come true to me.

Btw, I really liked that idea of an improved Sims, and would very much like to play such game if it existed xD

*cough* Oculus Rift *cough*

Even then, there was such a thing as the Virtual Boy, so nothing new.

The Occulus Rift, as observed by the previous users, is the device that you are seeking. Combine that with an omni-directional treadmill and you, sir, hath a fantasy realised.

(Just don't try and make a porno version of this. It can only end badly.)
