Just because I watched a few.

DISLIKE

Freaky (2020) - this is one I could have skipped and not missed anything. It's just awkward and bland. As much as they try to pander to Gen Z wokeness they still play up Vince Vaughn kissing a teenage boy for laughs which is certainly A Choice. It's also weird that a serial killer that doesn't clean himself turns into a femme fatale with perfect cat-eye liner, a high ponytail, and no fly aways.

Wrong Turn (2021) - I only made it about half way through due to implied sexual assault. Dale and Tucker vs. Evil (2010) did the whole
chronic misunderstanding leading to tragedy thing better. There wasn't enough back and forth for it to feel like anything but the bad guys being reprehensible--which would have been fine if there wasn't the set up that it was a moral quandary with the reveal that the hikers were being punished because they killed someone who had been trying to help them.

RECOMMEND

The Ritual (2017) - A group of men go on a wilderness hike in honor of their friend who was murdered. I feel like the more I like something the less I have to say about it sometimes, and my eloquence drops. The Ritual does scares good. It made my eyes leak sad tears. Great effects, great atmosphere, much pain in my soul.
 
I liked Freaky lol. It was really entertaining, I thought.

Definitely a surprise for me was Willy's Wonderland (2021) for 2 reasons - 1) Nic Cage and 2) the fact that's its obviously based on 5 Nights at Freddy's which I never cared for. Nic doesn't speak a single word in this film and still manages to be a likeable badass. They don't waste too much time on exposition in my opinion and it had some fun fight scenes. I would rate it 4/5.

Nic Cage was wonderful in that. His character was aspirational levels of bad ass. Just keeping on task and taking everything in stride, even if that thing is a homicidal ostrich lol. (but seriously, I enjoyed his performance)

I like Freaky too...But I got exactly what I was expecting out of it...Dumb Fun. I was expecting a bad movie, and for that reason I enjoyed my time with it.

As for a horror film I recommend that's relatively recent (That seems to be the trend here) The Invisible Man. I love the Universal Monsters, and this was definitely a good way to reintroduce one of them to a new generation.
 
I suppose we're talking about recent flicks? That's going to be tough because almost ALL recent horror movies are terrible.

Wounds (2019) - Terrible movie, not scary and falls completely flat.
Gretel & Hansel (2020) - Beautiful visuals but that's about it, a good example of style over substance. Not only is the plot in-coherent and boring, but its in-your-face themes can be seen a mile away.
Color Out of Space (2019) - Trailers looked promising but the movie sucks. What a complete disappointment, not even Nicolas Cage could've saved this awful movie. They also missed a great opportunity to make this film black and white. Go watch Annihilation with Natalie Portman (which has a similar story) if you want to see cosmic horror done right.

RECOMMEND
The Lighthouse (2019) - Pure perfection, both in terms of visuals, atmosphere and story. Deep and fascinating characters with some amazingly written dialogue. It messes with your mind, but in a satisfying way. Robert Eggers is the one of the best filmmakers in modern times and I can't wait to see his next film The Northman.

Ari Aster is where it’s at as far as slow burning horror is concerned. Loved Hereditary and Midsommar.

I also recently watched Eli Roth’s The Green Inferno and holy sh*t was it ruthless.

Oh man...the Lighthouse was a damn masterpiece. One of my few 10/10 movies. Other than that, yeah, I agree, most modern horror is trash's trash.
 
I’d highly recommend Saint Maud to anyone who enjoyed midsommar or hereditary. It’s got that uncomfortable vibe to it, but it’s not unbearably scary either. I’d say it’s more disturbing than anything, which is my favorite genre of horror

Well, yeah, Eli Roth revels in torture porn, he also directed Hostel. I like brutal movies as much as anyone, but torture porn is where I draw the line.

I also watched the first Saw recently and still wondering if I should see the latest one (Spiral). It's a shame what this series devolved into because the first movie is a legitimately well-made film. I loved seeing Adam and Lawrence's exchanges and how not only their stories, but also Amanda and Tapp's unfolded, and that ending is still one of the best twists ever. I also remember renting it on my 17th birthday as a "celebration" of sorts back when Blockbuster was still around, lol. Man how the times have changed, everything I used to love is going out of business.

Yeah I’m very aware of Eli Roth’s tendencies of torture porn. The Hostel flicks were never my cup of tea, but I do really like Cabin Fever. I’d say The Green Inferno is slightly more in line with Cabin Fever’s gore, with the exception of one character death that was really brutal to sit through.

As much as I love the first Saw movie, the sequels were always garbage to me and from what I’ve heard about Spiral, it sounds like it’s keeping in line with its predecessors.

@bSTAR_182 yeah, Jigsaw is one weird (read: deeply-disturbed) dude. He DOES have a point about anti-maskers, though.

I'll admit, I'm kinda tempted to see the new Spiral because of Chris Rock and SLJ is great in everything he's in, but the last few movies have been hot garbage and I heard this new movie changes nothing.

Speaking of which, I watched Ready or Not a few days ago as well, it's a Saw-esque horror film. Same basic concept of people having to survive deadly games, except without the torture (porn) elements, but still quite brutal and bloody. I don't know if I'd call it good, but it's dumb fun.

I also might get around to watching The Conjuring 1 and 2 and the first Quiet Place again before The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It and A Quiet Place II hit theaters, respectively. It feels good to be fully-vaccinated and being able to go back to the theaters again, even in a limited capacity.

I saw Unfriended the other night. Not a good movie but it was a spontaneous pick and good enough to kill a boring evening.

I thought Spiral was a solid film. It's very much a new era for the Saw series since it has no ties to Jigsaw, but it's done really well as a film. Chris Rock is really charismatic and genuinely likable and easily my favorite protagonist since Strahm. The drama and themes explored in the film are quite good and extremely relevant today. The torture aspect isn't quite front and center like it has been in some of the later ones which I think really benefits the film overall. The ending is left open for a sequel which I think was already confirmed last month, but with that in mind, I feel like they should have held off on the twist and saved it for a later film as it really lacks impact here and I'm still unsure as to how I feel about it moving forward in a post Jigsaw world.
 
'Bout to go grab a bite to eat and sit down and watch Army of the Dead on Netflix. It's too bad WB won't let Snyder finish/continue his Snyderverse, so this is a fresh start that'll hopefully lead to a franchise of his own down the line. His Dawn of the Dead remake was great, so I have high hopes for this.

Dude...it's SO weird you said that about Dawn of the Dead...I'm literally listening to a review of his Dawn of the Dead right now as I'm reading this...
