The King of Kings
I'm aware a GOTY thread exists but that's not what this thread is about. As a gamer, I've found it rather difficult to keep up with current releases, which might be true for some of you guys as well. So this year, I figured we could share with everyone the best games (new or old) that you got to play in 2014 without being limited to releases of a specific year.

Anyway, 2014 was a pretty bad year for me as a gamer. I have been feeling a little burnt out on games and actually didn't get to pass as many games as I have in previous years despite still having a lot to play and catch up on. Though that's not to say it's been a total waste. So here are some of my favorite games played in 2014.

Super Mario 3D World - Easily one of Nintendo's best efforts. Everything that made 3D Land on the 3DS a great game and a perfect evolution of the Mario formula is made bigger and better in this charming platformer.

Hitman: Absolution - My only experience with Hitman was a portion of Blood Money that I wasn't exactly feeling. Absolution on the other hand completely sold me. The game has a real sense of style and can even look very stunning at times. Missions can also be tackled in multiple ways making for great replay value. It's definitely one of the more satisfying stealth games I've ever played and an amazing entry in the genre.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D - I'm ashamed to admit that I got this on release day and only barely played it after three years. It's still the same classic game but better which makes for one hell of a handheld experience that's hard to put down.

Disney's Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse - This one is definitely a hidden gem for me as I only stumbled upon it by accident and what I ended up getting was a charming platformer/excellent remake. This one is a must for any fan of Disney/Mickey Mouse or the platforming genre in general.

Borderlands 2 - Just like the first one before it, Borderlands 2 offers an extensive amount of content and co-op fun with plenty of guns and jokes in between. But what makes Borderlands 2 even more special than its predecessor is its narrative, customization options, and colorful landscapes. Not to mention the insane amount of easter eggs/secrets. Definitely a sequel to remember.

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U - Easily my favorite in the series. 8-player smash, stage bosses, omega stage types, tons of modes, and multiple control options more than make up for the lack of a Subspace Emissary. The game is just as fun as ever and its beautiful HD visuals really make a difference.

So what great games did you guys get to play last year?

the first things that come to mind are –

Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN-
Counter-Strike: Global Assault
Windjammers (i think i played it for the first time in 2014?)
Grandia
Under Night In-Birth Exe : Late (UNIEL)
JoJo's Bizzare Adventure (1998)
XCOM

New

inFamous: Second Son - This was the first game in the inFamous series that I have played and after playing it, I want to try the older ones. I had a lot of fun with inFamous: Second Son. Using Smoke, Neon, and Video (And Concrete, but I don't count it since you get it at the end of the game) to fight enemies with each one varying differently when it comes to combat, exploring Seattle (Especially the Red Lantern district with the gorgeous neon lighting.), fighting the DUP and bringing down their control of Seattle. I also like that the civilian NPCs react to your Karma level, it's small, but I like it.

Thief - To be honest, I don't think that this game is as bad as what people make it out to be, especially the fans of the older games. They changed the voice actor for the main character, I don't care, it's just a voice. There's magic, there was magic in the other games. You have a blackjack instead of a sword, that's a good thing if you ask me. For a Stealth game, I really liked it. I liked going through in the world and taking as many items as I can and then stealing more valuable or important items during the story, or even stealing people's money when they have their backed turns. I like the stealth in this game, and I like that you can interact with the world through various means and that you can take multiple paths to reach your goal. I like that you can use various types of arrows such as water arrows to put out fires, rope arrows so that you can climb in some areas, blunt arrows to interact with some objects, and some more. Combat sucks, but it's a good thing if you ask me since it is a stealth game and you're being discouraged to fight and instead encouraging you to be stealthy. I like the dark, gritty, and a mess of the steampunk world that it is set in. The only problems that I will say that I had with the game were some graphical issues from stuff that I can get by such as some good textures in one place, but awful textures right next to the good ones, to something like signs on walls getting larger or smaller, he enemy AI can be stupid sometimes, and there is also the one thing that people complained about, the fact that you can only climb up or down in certain areas which did get irritate me a few times when it looked like I could climb up or down something only to be blocked from being able to.

Alien: Isolation - I remember the absolute abomination that was Aliens: Colonial Marines from 2013 and how disappointing that game was. So when I saw the trailer for Alien: Isolation late in 2013, I had some doubts at first since it was being made by Creative Assembly who put out Total War: Rome II in an unfinished state and that this was going to be their first attempt at a first person survival horror stealth game, but the teasers and trailers they put out were promising. After I finally got my hands on it, I am liking it a lot. Scarce ammo, you have to rely on crafting items, the motion tracker being both helpful and un-helpful to you, trying to avoid the lone Alien as it stalks the station, fighting Working Joes and Humans, re-wiring circuits to change a few things such as opening vents or turning an alarm system on or off, save points that are spread apart so that if you die without saving then you're going to be doing a lot of work again, using stealth to avoid imminent death, and the Alien having no clear AI pathing as he goes where ever it goes. I also like that they brought the cast of the original Alien movie in to do some voice work. The only thing that I will complain are some of the deaths as they felt cheap.

Five Nights at Freddy's/Five Nights at Freddy's 2 - Yeeeeeeeeeep, these 2 games are two of my favorite games of this of 2014. I had some genuine fun while playing these 2 games. All you do is watch some cameras (And wind a music box in the 2nd game) and make keep tabs on animatronics so that you know where they are at and checking blindspots to be prepared for when they are about to kill you and either close a door, put on a head, flash your flashlight, or winding up a music box to ward them off and there is just something about that that I enjoyed about them. I did scared a few times, it was all because I was not paying attention. But besides the gameplay, the other thing I just love is the mystery about the story of the games on who exactly the Phone Guy is, why do the animatronics want to kill you, why do you have these weird hallucinations or the bizarre things that happen while you stay a night, and who is the Purple Man/Golden Freddy Killer.

Deception IV: Blood Ties - This was the first time I experienced playing a Deception game and after this one, I want to play the other ones. Create gruesome and/or humiliating traps to kill people who trying to kill you. I enjoyed setting up traps and having people meet their doom from them.

There were 2 more game that I wanted to play that came out this year that I was excited for, but due to an error on eBay (Yet another reason why I should not trust eBay, but yet I continue to use it) and a shortage of spending money, I was unable to play both of them.

Old

World of Warcraft - I finally decided to spend money on this to actually played and I was addicted to this game. I put 3 months worth of continuous play on it and I had a lot of fun playing it.

DC Universe Online - I should probably call this game DC Universe We Don't Want You To Play It since it took me 2 years finally be able to play this game. First tried to play it in 2012 on the PS3, but couldn't because the updating process took forever and eventually I had to give up trying to play it on the PS3 since I got disconnected a lot and updating restarts if you get disconnected. After some testing with some games on my PC, I finally was able to download DC Universe Online and play it on there. And I had crazy amounts of fun playing during the time that I played it. Unfortunately, I am unable to play the game anymore on my PC due to a problem that I got after a few hours of playing it where the game crashed non-stopped and I couldn't get into the game before it crashed and the only way to possibly fix it was to delete it and re-download it all to which I am not going to do since it took me 3 whole days to to finally get to play it on my PC and I am not going to spend 3 more days just to re-download it and hope that it gets fixed or have it non-stop crash on me again. But since I got a PS4, I can't wait to try the PS4 version and play it again.

Need for Speed: Rivals - 2014 was a Need for Speed year for me. I went and watched the atrocious Need for Speed movie, downloaded and played Need for Speed: World and I have never been so mixed with a game before in my life, got back on Need for Speed: Most Wanted (2012) to improve on it and finally completed all the Most Wanted races, and then I got Need for Speed: Rivals and I enjoyed it a lot, from the races, driving around the open world and seeing the environment, finding shortcuts, escaping the po-po, being the po-po and busting racers, and using power ups to give myself an advantage. Plus it's refreshing to actually customize my cars with since Most Wanted (2012) didn't have any.

F.E.A.R. - FINALLY! I got to play this game after so many years and it paid off especially since I got it on sale on Steam. It was exactly what I thought it was going to be from the videos that I saw of it, and I enjoyed every bit of it. And since I got the Steam version, I also got Extraction Point and Perseus Mandate, and while I did enjoy them, I thought the main game was more fun.

But anyway.
My favourite games I played in 2014 were The Evil Within, Mark of the Ninja, Silent Hill 2, Silent Hill 3, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Deadly Premonition, Sleeping Dogs, Deus Ex: Invisible War, Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear Solid 2, Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence, Resident Evil Revelations, Resident Evil 5. PHEW.

I guess it's because I only got my own XBOX 360 for Christmas 2013.

The Last of Us Remastered (PS4) - This game was amazing. Nothing more to add.

Super Mario 3D World - Such a charming game, and very satisfying to complete, particularly after beating the devilishly tricky Champion Road.

Super Smash Bros (3DS and Wii U) - Smash is always a lot of fun and these two were no different.

Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D (3DS) - While this isn't as much fun on your own, when you team up with somebody it can be great.

Professor Layton - Every single one of the six games (3DS) - A charming series with great stories and puzzles.

The Last of Us
World of Warcraft
Guitar Hero (various games)
Twisted Metal 2
Ocarina of Time
Goldeneye 007

lots of throwbacks from my childhood :)
