Resident Evil 5 Why was there no merchant in the game?

Anyone else feel that the merchant character from RE4 should have returned for this game? It makes no sense that Chris and Sheva are able to buy weapons and sell treasures for gold coins out of thin air...

Unfortunately, the co-op nature of the game meant many things had to be simplified to keep the gameplay flowing between players and a merchant would only disrupt the experience given the level based structure of the game. However, I don't see why the inventory management screen between levels couldn't just have a merchant in the background accompanied by a few lines when you buy, sell, and upgrade stuff.

I agree, that probably would have worked.

I didn't like that either. I get that there was co-op to content with but I think they should've made the effort or a merchant or an item box. Same for 6. My biggest gripe there, though, was the gun variety.

See this is exactly why I dislike online co-op being added to almost every new game these days it oversimplifies the games themselves to where there's no room for creativity!

That's still debatable. Capcom are a bit iffy on that front too because RE won't stay relevant otherwise. They could try something original which is risky, or they could follow a formula/trend to maximize profits.

I guess it's all about the money... And obviously that kind of thinking has already come back to bite them in the buttocks given how downhill their games have been going as of late.

Kinda. Every company these days is doing that. So the Triple A market as a whole is getting dunked because of it.

As far as RE goes. It's...decent I suppose. Everything else is a mixed bag. Their recent fighters have gotten a LOT of flak however.

On the other side, Monster Hunter is booming.

Uh, yea.... I may have accidentally killed him during one of my playthroughs of re4. That's most probably the reason why he's not in re5.

Sorry about that

I don't mind there not being a merchant. He dosen't make much sense as a character and why keep something that isn't even logical in the newer games? It would feel even more like a clone of RE4 than it already is.

Because this is a very logical series...

It's not like a lot of things made sense in RE5 either. For example where exactly are Chris and Sheva buying their weapons from and selling their treasures to if there's no actual merchant? It made more sense in the old games when the characters had to find their own weapons.

When they get new weapons selling stuff etc.. that is off screen. Those events actually never happens, it's like they always had those weapons.

Yeah sorry I'm not buying that. It was something that the developers obviously overlooked because they copied the concept of buying weapons from RE4 but decided not to include the guy who sells them to you and that's all there is to it. Chris and Sheva are basically purchasing weapons out of magical thin air.

It's a game mechanic, plain and simple. It doesn't have to make sense just like the magical item boxes.

But the magical item boxes made perfect sense! Clearly there was an underground tunnel connecting each box together and an enchanted leprechaun lives in those tunnels and brings you your items through the item boxes. =D

All of the answers in this thread are solid. In my opinion, Capcom wanted a less campy feel for RE5 and wanted to go a touch more realistic. That is, until the volcano finale. haha
