Sony announces mini PlayStation Classic, could Resident Evil 1 or 2 come preloaded?
Following the success of Nintendo’s NES Classic Mini and SNES Classic Mini, Sony are looking to throw their hat into the retro gaming ring by releasing the PlayStation Classic: a miniaturised version of the original PlayStation/PlayStation One console that includes a hearty helping of 20 preloaded retro titles to pull at the heartstrings of many a nostalgic gamer.
The system is confirmed to include two original-design PlayStation controllers and support modern TVs with its 720p and 1080p HD output. At present only 5 of the 20 preloaded titles have confirmed, but these so far include:
- Final Fantasy VII
- Tekken 3
- Ridge Racer Type 4
- Jumping Flash
- Wild Arms
And while Sony are insisting that they are keen to reveal more of the preloaded lineup over the ‘coming months’, we can already imagine fans cherry picking their favourite titles that they’d love to see return as a pack-in offering in the PlayStation Classic. However, we’d posit that the original Resident Evil and Resident Evil 2 were both instrumental in the original PlayStation’s early success, with Resident Evil 2 selling a then-unprecedented 4.9 million copies alone in its original release alone, according to VGChartz, attributing greatly to the amount of consoles that Sony were able to sell.
The PlayStation Classic will launch worldwide on December 3, 2018 — precisely 24 years after the launch of the original console— and will retail for £89.99/$99/€99.99/9,980 yen. Amazon UK are already accepting pre-orders.
