AFAIK, it is not possible to kill him with the rock. I've done it a ton of times and it doesn't kill him even if it lands right on top of him, doesn't even trigger the tentacles. It's just to block the path and delay him so you can run through.

I've honestly lost count. One of my files went to 20+ plays, but now I tend to only do new game runs which take longer. I'd estimate maybe 40-50+ run throughs. A whole bunch back on GC, more on the emulator on my computer now. It's just a game that keeps giving!

They're both very good, but in different ways. I've used both on many, many playthroughs of all difficulties although traditionally red 9 more so. In a nutshell: Blacktail is faster/safer easier to respond quickly to threats, red 9 is more efficient/powerful and more likely to get one shots...
